And when individuals aren‘t responsible for the hits, head coach Rich Newbrough can usually count on a gang tackle. Mark Bryson photos Mark Bryson Chronicle Staff Different opponent. Same outcome. In almost a carbonâ€"copy performance of last week‘s 37â€"18 win over University of Guelph Gryphons, Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks once again looked average for 30 minutes against University of Toronto Blues Saturday, only to come on like gangbusters in the second half and delight a small Seagram Stadium crowd with a 44â€"17 romp. The win raised WLU‘s midâ€"season record to 3â€"1, while Toronto dropped to 1â€"3. Laurier still trails Western Mustangs and Windsor Lancers, who both sport unblemished 4â€"0 marks. Laurier‘s performance Saturday was incrediply simiâ€" lar to seven days prior at Alumni Stadium in Guelph. Trailing 146 at halftime, Hawks rebounded with an outstanding second half both offensively and defensively, Secondâ€"half tear for Laurier Laurier‘s second half heroics have accounted for 90 points this season in four games while allowing the opposition 20. holding Guelph to three points while scoring 31 Against Toronto, Laurier held a slim 16â€"14 lead at halftime before once again exploding in the second half, this time scoring 28 while giving up three. ‘*Yeah, that‘s been kind of a trend for us all year. We seem to be adjusting well in the second half," said WLU head coach Rich Newbrough, admitting the first half doldrums could cause problems against the league‘s stronger teams. ‘"Against a good team like Windsor you may get so far behind that you can‘t catch up." Hawk quarterback Rod Philp continued his domination of the airwaves Saturday, completing 21 of 27 passes for 379 yards. Laurier also ran for 267 yards, bringing the total offensive output to an awesome 646 yards. Over the past three games, Philp has connected on 73 per cent of Siskin forward Shawn DuBois stretches for the puck during second period action against Brantford Classics Sunday. Siskins erupted for three thirdâ€"period goals en route to a 6â€"2 win. Mark Bryson photo Mark Bryson Chronicle Staff Waterloo Siskins appear to be the cream of the Midwestern Junior B hockey leagueâ€"and they‘re only going to get better. Still learning the bumpâ€"andâ€"grind game emâ€" ployed by coach Gerry Harrigan, Waterloo explodâ€" ed for three unanswered thirdâ€"period goals Sunday night en route to a 6â€"2 victory over the previouslyâ€" undefeated Brantford Classics at Albert McCorâ€" mick Arena. Waterioo carried the game throughout, yet the league‘s newest entry managed to escape into the dressing room behind only 3â€"2 after two periods. However, thirdâ€"period goals by Shawn DuBois, Jamie Pegg and Dan Rintsche brought the final score to one more indicative of the play. The win improved Waterloo‘s earlyâ€"season record to 4â€"0. Brantford slipped to 3â€"1. ‘"As long as you keep getting chances, there‘s always the possibility that you‘re going to bury them," said Siskin general manager Peter Brill. Waterloo‘s lack of scoring punch was not entirely caused by themselves. Brantford goaltender Rob McNeish sparkled between the pipes for two periods. Waterloo‘s Dave Motz turned in a strong performance as well. _ ‘‘The guys are going to have to get used to Gerry and (assistant coach) Chuck‘s (Neisen) system. Hawks battle the 2â€"2 McMaster Marauders Saturday in Hamilton. They‘ll also be doing a little scoreboard watching as Western and Windsor clash. A Windsor win, followed by a loss to Laurier the follow ing week, could create a threeâ€"way tie for first. Despite the seemingly lopsided score, Waterloo held their own against Western and played the country‘s best team surprisingly well. Philp teamed up with receivers Joe Nastasiuk and Rob Evraire for four touchdown scores, including a 76 yarder to Evraire and a 46â€"yard score to Nastasiuk. Evraire caught 10 passes for 172 yards while Nastasiuk hauled in nine for 136. University of Waterloo Warriors showed a lot of guts in a 357 loss to the No. 1 nationally ranked Western Mustangs Saturday. Richard Chen scored Waterloo‘s lone touchdown. Waterloo‘s record is now 0â€"4,while Western is 4â€"0. his passes, something virtually unheard of at this level Gerry likes the bumpers and the grinders andâ€"you knowâ€"the one‘s that are doing it are the ones that are going to play," said Brill. â€" More specifically, Waterloo employs a system where two men do the digging while a third remains high in front of the net. â€" â€" Waterloo failed to capitalize on number of firstâ€"period opportunities as McNeish turned aside 16 shots, compared to just six for Motz at the other end of the rink. McNeish was finally beaten at 2: 07 of the second by Don Oberle, who reâ€"routed a shot from the point. Chris Driscoll banged in a rebound 32 seconds later to put Waterloo up 2â€"0. Brantford narrowed the gap at 4: 01 as the Siskin defence allowed Jerry Thorne to walk in alone on Motzâ€"who was well back in his creaseâ€"and pick his spot. While looking impressive against Brantford, the same cannot be said of Waterloo‘s 6â€"5 win over Owen Sound Greys last Friday. MacKay scored with less than seven minutes remaining to seal the win, but the game could have gone either way. ‘"We weren‘t very consistent Friday. We lacked intensity and forechecking," said Bli". o * Deric Farquhar and Larry Rucchin were both scratched from Sunday‘s game. Farquhar, who has been hampered the past two seasons with shoulder problems, was sidelined with a pinched nerve in his neck. Rucchin suffered a charley horse in Friday‘s win over Owen Sound. Both players are on a dayâ€"toâ€"day basis. * Siskins next action is Friday night in Listowel Stratford Cullitons come to town Sunday. DuBois scored the eventual gameâ€"winner on a beautiful, shorthanded, giveâ€"andâ€"go effort with Mike MacKay. o John Williams paced Waterloo with three goals, while singles went to Oberle, MacKay and DuBois.
