We do the rest! MEN! The idea clicked A selfâ€"serve depot for desktop publishing fans With the greater emphasis in society on "putting ideas onto paper to their best advantage" and increased computer literacy, she feels desktop printing, and especially the self serve option, can only grow in popularity. She believes Clickâ€"Print will become primarily a self serve facility, and she anticipates opening other Clickâ€"Prints "as people come to see the benefits and ease of use. This could become a creative printing experience for many people." Medcalf offers both full service and the self service desktop publishing. Included in the full service are: design and layout, inputting of the text, formating and spellchecking, the creation of logos and other artwork and a high resolution printout on the paper stock of the customer‘s choice. For the more daring customers who chose the self service option, as well as the microcomputer and printers, Medcalf offers the use of a copier, worktable, cutters and other equipment needed to complete the document. She also will conduct handsâ€"on training sessions to groups of two or more. A Wilfrid Laurier business graduate, Medcalf was drawn to desktop publishing because of her "background in computers‘" and the frustrations she had often experienced in getting documents printed. "I saw changes occuring in the technology that could benefit many people," she said. Desktop publishing is simply the latest blend of modern computer technology and printing. "It‘s the use of a microcomputer, laser printer, mouse and scanner to integrate text, graphics and images into a finished document,‘" Medcalf explained. The primary advantage to the consumer is in greater the control it permits during document preparation and over the final product. Revisions can be made immediately and the customer is able to see almost instantaneousiy what the finished document will look like. Desktop printing is also less costly than the traditional printing methods," said Medcalf. "It‘s not true typeset quality, but it‘s close. There is software coming that will permit many of the special features that typesetting offers," said Medcalf. She admitted that quality of scanned photos is still poor, although improving, but line art and other images are easily integrated in a desktop published document. Medcaif has two graphic artists working with the company on a freeâ€"lance basis to aid customers in designing their documents. Established this spring by owner/manager Celia Medcalf, Clickâ€"Print, one of the first company‘s devoted exclusively to the idea of desktop publishing, offers Waterloo residents the equipment and facilities to publish their own documents, whether those documents be reports, resumes, flyers, brochures or business cards. *‘This technology is easy enough that most people can come in and do it themselves. It‘s helpful, but not necessary, to have a bag_kground in computers to use the DTP technology," said Medâ€" calf. Melodee Martinuk Chronicle Staft First there were the selfâ€"serve gas stations.
