Bassler of the Department of History of Memorial University of Newfoundland. . Chronicle Special ‘‘The German Canadians 1750â€"1937" is the English version of the efforts of scholar and professor Heinz Lehmann who chose this topic as his doctoral dissertation while a student at the University of Berlin. When he came to Canada in 1934 to research the topic he interviewed German Canadians from all walks of life and was given access to unpublished historical accounts. Passage through India is a The result was his published work in the form of two books and three additional papers. Few of these copies reached Canada, others were destroyed during bombing raids of the Second World War. This book covers the history of the German speaking immigrants, when and where they settled their religious, secular and cultural life. Lehmann observed that as late as 1939, there was no written account of the history of Canada‘s Germans, yet their presence in Canada had been known for 200 years. He found that after the First World War, the German element in Eastern Canada had been assimilated and they no longer spoke the German language. But in Western Canada, where there were large settlements, it remained until the 1930‘s. He noted Germans speaking the German language in Lunenburg County,. N.S., Waterloo County, Ont., and in various German "pockâ€" ets"" throughout the West. For instance, he said in the Niagara Peninsula in the 19th century, there was pressure on the Germans there to speak English with the consequence that in two generations they were absorbed and forgot their heritage. Their presence there was left out of textbooks and their language lost. This was not the case in the 1930s among Saskatchewan‘s Germans, where 15 per cent spoke the mother tongue. But during the First and Second World Wars, all Canadian Germans weren‘t eager to express ethnic pride and thus became Angliâ€" cized in alarming numbers. The author covers the Mennonite settleâ€" ments throughout Canada. Their history in this region began around 1800 when they settled on the middle Grand River â€" later to become Wateriloo County. They purchased 60,000 acres of land in 1805, the present day Waterloo township with the financial assisâ€" tance of the Mennonite settlement in Lanâ€" caster, Pa. After that Mennonites from Pennsylvania converged on this settlement and in 1807 another tract was purchased, the present day Woolwich township. Later, at the turn of the century, a new infusion of Germans arrived in Canada.
