PAGE 2 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, MaAY 6, 1987 (Continued from page 1) Schaub and his delegation would prefer the site be developed in a "more community oriented way" such as a soccer field, basebail diamond, swimming pool or picnic area. The next move for the various Beechwood neighbor associations is to lobby their respective residents and rally council to reâ€"evaluate the university site. The delegation expects a huge turnout of support at next Wednesday‘s meeting. . > The site selection team of four city staff members and Ald. Bob Henry ruled out the university site for a number of reasons; poor exposure from Columbia site, poor twinning capabilities, two separate administrations (university and city) and University of Waterloo architectural control. Further, the team felt the community would view a university location to be a "public barrier." _ Schaub said the residents are very skeptical about the city‘s long range plans for the Westside arena. When built, the arena is scheduled to take over events from Waterlipo Arena until a new facility can be built. But residents feel that may take some time. Arena ‘‘You and I know that by the time they get around to building another city arena, we‘ll be talking 10 to 15 years down the road," said Schaub. There was also concern that council was trying to deal with the process "as quickly as possible." *"*Two months certainly doesn‘t give us much time," said Pauline Cornelius of 449 Regency Court. Council will make a final decision on the site selection at its June 22 meeting. Construction is expected to begin this fall. Firefighters (Continued from page 1) Asked to comment on Hussey‘s statement Monday night, Carroll claimed he had missed the whole point to the court appeal. Waterloo is not appealing the awarded contract, she says, but rather the arbitration process which determines a firefighter‘s salary. â€" Of further concern (especially to reporters) was the manner in which someone sneaked the renumeration report on to council‘s agenda last week without previous notice. Reporters, who usually gather their council packets on Friday afternoon, did not receive the report until minutes before council sat down. "I don‘t really know what to say," said city clerk Ron Keeling when asked why the report had been held back. "Somebody must have decided that was the way it should be." Ald. Andrew Telegdi, known for his role as a public watch guard, admitted that he couldn‘t understand why the report was withheld. "Something went wrong. It shouldn‘t have happened that way," he said. City treasurer Tom Stockie, a member of the task force, said he handed in the report Friday at noon but made no special requests to have the document withheld. Erb, like Shortreed and Turnbull, said it would have been preferable to go along with the gradual increases as recommended by the task force.
