fEgiEEEiE Time for council to get down to serious business Congratulations to Mayor Carroll and her council. Nice pay raise you gave yourselves. - __ A Now maybe you will all get down to some serious business concerning the Public Notice you put in the paper months back concerning the Bylaw for lodging houses. My interest is “Lodging House Class Two" defined as a Lodging House where four or five persons are harboured, received, or lodged without a proprietor. feedback We really have the protection from Item No. 4: "To provide the neighborhood with protection from unfavorable impact of lodging houses." We have: I) Cars parked every which way, on the Just as tennis not so long ago was basically a middle-to-upper-middle class sport, so is fitness. The crowds of adults who have decided to add fitness as part of their lifestyle have created a billion dollar industry. The demand for individual attention has, from a business point of View. necessitated the opening or expansion of fitness centres which include highly sophisticated and costly equipment. The cost to belong to such clubs spirals, accordingly, until finally, by virtue of elimination, only the middle class or above can enjoy the benefits of fitness. Okay . . perhaps a dollar or, two isn't much. But what about the running shoes? A good pair of aerobic or jogging shoes can be as costly as groceries for one week for a family of four! Poor quality shoes will be scoffed at by most instructors due to the potential risk of injury to the knees, shin and feet caused by lack of adequate support. Okay..so there's a sale on at a factory outlet. Now what about the outfit? For some clubs it's policy to advocate that an exercise suit be worn during class. Exercise tights will keep germs where germs belong. Hah! A I'd like to say NONSENSE! But sadly it's true. I speak particularly with women in mind. The benefits of a well-rounded fitness program are vir- tually lost on a woman who cannot even afford to pay the babysitting expense for her child or children if she wants to attend a class. The point of this whole Charade is that fitness is not just a market. It's a lifestyle and one that should be access- ible to anyone no matter what the level of income, if there indeed even is one. Perhaps fitness is even more important to people who are suffering emotional or physical hardship. The stress release and potential for an increase in effi- ciency in the cardiovascular system will only help give more energy and self esteem where perhaps there is none. Then there's the fitness deals offered at great prices or perhaps for free. The unemployed or underprivileged, howev- er, could not even afford the maintain- ance costs which are hidden. These absentee landlords are having a great time taking good rents from the students and not looking after their property for maintenance as required. multitude of colors of exercise wear will add to a club's image . . . nothing more. All right, so a friend had an extra pair of leotards and an old exercise suit. You remember the kind. The dark blue or burgundy suits which haven't been seen in fitness clubs for years. (They're still in dance studios, but that's a different kettle of fish.) The suit will so great with the cheap running shoes. Doo't put any money down that this person will feel right at home with the money crowd. She won't. And she won't return. There is a bylaw that the sidewalks should be shovelled in the winter, but the students usually aren't given a shovel so if they don't borrow a neighbor's. why bother? No one ever checks. If you’re lucky the cost shouldn't exceed $300. Sure it pays for the kids' school clothes for a year. but who needs to buy clothes for kids who only get them dirty anyway? We cut our lawns and spray the ever-loving dandelions while the absentee landlords come once in a while and run around with a lawn mower. God forbid they should clip. rake, or pick up some garbage. One of the endless group of students have moved out this week but we know we can expect the same from the new batch. So, how about it, city council, how much longer must we put up with this? Perhaps we could get a tax cut? Elsie Kleswetter Waterloo, 0st. King Edward public school holds reunion W. Somerset Maugham mte.
