The ha] performance in Centre In The Square's Orchestras of the World series will be by the Stuttgart Philharmonic Sunday, May 3 at 8 p.m. This is the only Canadian appearance by this acclaimed orchestra. The Stuttgart Philharmonic has a distinguished history and grand tradition including perfor- mances under such renowned conductors as Furtwangler. Heger, Abendroth and von Wein- garmer. The orchestra was founded in 1924 and in 1925 became the first ever to broadcast live over a German radio station. Today, the Stuttgart Philharmonic plays a vital role in the musical life of Stuttgart. In addition to its annual sold-out series at the famous Liederhalle. the orchestra also performs for the Southern German Radio Network and makes frequent appearances at the Wurttem- berg State Opera. Wolf-Dieter Hauschild became music director of the Stuttgart Philharmonic during the 1985-86 season. having regularly appeared as guest conductor With the orchestra prior to his appoint- ment. For the May 3 performance at The Centre, Maestro Hauschild has chosen the Johannes Brahms Variations on a Theme by J .
