PAGE 4 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22, 1987 Chronicle Staff The Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo YWCA is launching a $106,000 capital fundraising drive to finance renovations to its downtown Kitchener women‘s hostel. Many people believe the YWCA is simply a place for physical fitness or a women‘s residence. That was once the case, but today the Kitchener YMCA serves as a 55â€"bed regional emergency hostel for girls and women who are homeless and in serious difficulty. Clients range from teenage girls who have left home because of family vi;)lence, to elderly women, discharged from hospital and living on an allowance. Announced this morning, the campaign is expected to last two months. * ‘‘The YWCA has had to change with the times...we‘re just responding to the community need," said a spokeperson for the YWCA. ‘"We‘ve been turning away one women every day, and have been doing so since last September." Money raised will be spent on structural renovations and other improvements to increase the hostel‘s fire and physical safety and provide wheelchair accessibility. Chairing the campaign are Edythe Cooke, wife of Kitchener MP David Cooke, who will head a canvass of working women, »~d Kitchener businessman James Lackner, who is spearheading ine corporate canvass.
