Coral Andrews Chronicle Special Joel and Ethan Coen‘s humor is dry as the Arizona desert. Good thing too. Arizona is the key word in their latest manic effort Raising Ariâ€" zona now playing at the Waterloo Theatre. The Coen brothers were the hyperâ€"smarts behind film noir/film rouge psychoâ€"thriller Blood Simple, which to many critics was considered an ‘80s classic in its genre, for brilliant editing and photography by lensâ€" man supreme Barry Sonnenfeld. Sonnenfeld‘s ingenious eye strikes again, this time tracing the zany antics of Herbert "H.1." McDonnough and wife Ed (Edâ€" wina) who happen to be a perfectly normal couple, aiming to settle down to raise a family in Arizona. i Well, almost normal. H. I.‘s a likeable mug (Nichoâ€" las Cageâ€"Peggy Sue Got Married, Racing with the Moon), his one weakness repeatedly hoiding up allâ€"night convenience stores. "The sun don‘t rise and set in a court of groceries," observes one fellow cellmate. H. I. is one of society‘s missing links, and durâ€" ing his third consecutive offense, decides to reform and marry booking officer sweetheart Ed (Holly Hunter), dreaming of whiteâ€"picket fence future "7 to 14 months away." But nature has other plans. Ed is barren, or as hubby H.L so aptly notes (courtesy of the Coen‘s brothers‘ wry ink) "her insides were a rocky place where my seeds could find no purâ€" chase." So Ed and H. I. ‘find their purchase‘ at the home of the famed Arizona quintuplets, from unpainted furniture king Nathan Arizona (Trey Wilson) and his little mother who hit the baby boomer jackpot cashing in on fertility pills. ‘‘She‘s just got more than she can handle," justifies Ed, as she and H. I. set about bringing up baby (T. J. Kuhn â€" a dapper diapered sceneâ€"stealer). H. I. and Ed‘s blissful domesticity literally becomes a fool‘s paraâ€" dise, through an onslaught of circumstantial sitâ€"com hijinx, most in reference to H. I.‘s jailbird past. The Coens begin violent asâ€" sault to the funny bone in the guise of the Snobe brothers, two fatso, slob exâ€"cons, Gale (John Goodmanâ€"True Stories) and Evelle (Bill Forsyth.) When H. L. loses his job over a wifeâ€"swapping fistâ€"fight with his foreman, The Snobes remain opâ€" timistic. ‘‘*You‘re young, you‘ve got your health. What the hell do you want with a job?" _ _ The Snobes are also concerned about proper infant care. "You should be breastâ€"feeding him ma‘am, or he‘ll grow up hating you forever. T hese â€"Minne a polis screenwrights razz all cherished American dream institutions, with offâ€"theâ€"cuff dazzle. Nicholas Gage and Broadway ace Holly Hunter are deliciously deadpan swathed in a blanket of innocence in this babyâ€"fever comedy, both parents vitally committed to do what‘s morally right, yet simultaneously raising hell in Raising Arizona.
