His first solo album also carried the same title and just to confirm his assertion that listening is a virtue, the best track here goes under the same name. But selfâ€"righteous or not, Cope delivers the Wayne Shorter jazz composers and saxophonists of the past quarter century. After spending his formative years with Art Blakey‘s Jazz Messengers, he moved on to become an integral part of the Miles Davis quintet that would establish new rock. It‘s definitely a change in direction as he strays from the sometimes overreaching complexities of his Teardrop days. The title cut is a great introduction to what should be an even better full length album. members of this now famous group included Ron Carter, Tony Williams and Herbie Hanâ€" vehicle was Weather Report, a group he coâ€"founded and guided musically for 15 years. principal and most commercially mccesshl During this time, be ailso maintained a prolific solo career, producing a number of wonderful mer sc _ 32 ) mm _ mm S 10 50t 0e0.,,., .. s,mandnee un hraniiiee ie cncnininemininnninninguncnecvcncens i armontlfuen acaianinen onmecncmmemermn mm menncacmmatines 666 VICTORIA ST. It‘s an ambitious work, more inventive than the current wave of new jazz, but pales in comparison to his eartier records. des It‘s elaborate in much the way recent Weather um. _ Report is, mindful more of style and detail records most of which are unfortunately out of synthesizers and when he does play (primarily sopramo sax, unfortunately), he isâ€" all too careful in his appreach. Perhaps because of the recording hiatus, Shorter made a conscious decision to play it safe. He‘s still a big cheese among horn players, but Phantom Navigator reveals him to be a little more of the process variety. Heaven 17 This is a definite change of pace from the usual dance floor antics of exâ€"Human Leaâ€" guers Martyn Ware and Craig Marsh. More cebral and popâ€"oriented, it is actually quite a charming record. Heaven 17 has always been one of the more interesting electroâ€"funk outfits but here they lightweight by some standards, "Contenders" and "If I Were You"‘ show real artistic growth. Compared to the sometimes excessive synâ€" thetic dromne of earlier work, the wreckless swing of these songs is a welcome change. Heck, there‘s even some real drums‘! The band m completely abandon its ornate R&B s but the added bounce and even some politicizing bring about a new dimension.
