_Feedback LETTERS Appeal to help save cats from injury As soon as the cold weather arrives, cats become more susceptible to a painful death or injury, being literally ‘"ripped to shreds" in the fan or fan belt of a vehicle. During cold weather, cats tend to huddle around the engines of vehicles in a desperate attempt to keep warm. This unfortunate, albeit underâ€" standable habit, leads to the deaths or injuries for numerous cats annually in Ontario. Cats tend to crawl up under the hood of parked vehicles. Once the owner returns to the vehicle and starts the engine the cat is unaware of the imminent danger until it is too late. These unfortunte accidents could be eliminated or drastiâ€" **Pull, pull, pull. Bend your knees, pelvic tilt! Keep breathing!‘‘ The sound of work. Elastic work. More and more women are turning away from straight aerobic classes and are concerned with strength. Strength to tighten and tone muscles. Let‘s face it, spring is just around the corner and then, say it isn‘t so, summer, and summer fashions! A new way to tone the bottom or at least strengthen the upper body to make the body more proporâ€" tioned is to stretch elastic. Not only do the elastics take up very little space, they enable an entire class to work simultaneously on strengthening a particular set of musâ€" It would require a great deal of equipment and space to get 20 to 30 people doing the same thing. Elastics also lessen the dangers of working with weights, especially free weights. When someone is trying to overload their muscles (challenge them by adding more resistance) they may not have complete control of the weights, creatâ€" ing a risk factor, particularly if the weights are overhead. Pulling or pushâ€" ing against the elastics proves a need to work slowly, giving some control over the movements, enabling the participant "‘: -:,,,. ‘ P a C 3 { f P R ’3 * 1 & P * empatall P g * P j ‘ ,., ® ‘ P e % 8 i. g % ‘\ * . w & *. & 1‘ # h wl + 4 f ‘v." ~.=~ , é; j % “; :’v ( ; § ':“,r; Â¥ } ’ ‘?‘“ ' ks C * "Raising the kids. An example of an elastic exercise is as follows: standing with knees bent and pelvic area tilted up and to the front (same position as weight lifting) the arms are behind the back with palms of hands facing together. m:(kezlng the hands rigid with thumbs into the paims, the elastic is wrapped around the arms just above the wrists. With the exhale of breath the elastic is pushed apart using the triceps (the muscles on the back of the upper arms), the upper and middle back, and shoulders. The elastic should at all times remain tensed while repeating the movement, which can be dorie slowly or quickly, producing strength or endurâ€" ance. There are many more moves which work the legs, abdomen, back arms and neck. Creativity and imagination can greatly expand the use of the elastics. Though I have mentioned women using elastics, they are not the only ones to benefit. Big strong men can get even stronger using elastics. The repetitions can be increased and gradually the size of the elastic can be diminished to provide greater resistance. I have also used the elastics with a church group of girls aged eight to 13. They grunted and groaned, set their teeth in a determined grit, they pulled and pushed and best of all, they giggled. cally reduced if the person driving the vehicle banged on the hood of the vehicle or honked the horn prior to starting the If the horn is used to scare the cat, ensure that enough time is given to allow a cat to escape before turning on the engine. Do not make the mistake of beeping the horn and then immediately turning on the engine. Vehicles equipped with space heaters are more likely to attract cats seeking warmth. Alerting any cats lurking under the hood of your vehicle should be done each time you start the engine. This way you will develop a habit of alerting cats and will be less likely to forget. While cats are less likely to crawl up under the hood of a vehicle in the warmer weather, being curious creatures they have been known to do so. On opening day at the new Waterloo store, there was a bustling crowd of shoppers. Your story and pictures brought many of those people out. We will certainly keep in touch with you in the months ahead. We appreciate your support. Dorothy G. Griffin Business Administration Director There appeared an interesting article in the Saturday Review some time back, about. what ‘n’.n to women who choose a career in the sciences, and suggesting that perhaps more young women should give this some thought. Starting with Marie Curie, several women have won the Nobel Prize for their achievements in science. But the reason why more women do not choose careers in biplogy, chemistry, medicine and so on, was perhaps best answered by the great philosopher Goethe. He wrote: "One never learns to understand truly anything but what one loves.‘" And it was pointed out at a symposium of women scientists that objects. Or so it would appear. Dr. Bruno Bettelheim, professor of educational psychology at the Universiâ€" ty of Chicago, said that if women loved curiosity enough to pursue it regardless of obstacles, they could perform as brilliantly in science as any man. The fact that so many have won the Nobel Prize indicates that they can perform a whole lot better than most men. It seems that one of the main factors that keep more women from following a career in science is that, while four out of every five male scientists, engineers and physicians are married and living with their wives â€" only two out of five women in the same professions are married and living with their husbands. But, like most statistics, this one is misleading until you do a little digging. It seems that a man‘s expectation of what he wants in a wife is essentially unchanged as he moves through his advanced training. Whether he is a college biology major or a qualified ‘‘"Obtaining adequate childâ€" care. I‘ve had that problem since I had my child â€" being on a waiting list for six months or being a single mother? â€" N. Glenn Perrett Human Education Coâ€"ordinator Ontario Humane Society WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4, 1987 â€"â€" it mnhfil. he may choose the same of women. 4 * But, this is very different in the case of a woman. Her expectations of what she wants in a husband are apt to change very significantly as she advances in higher education. The man who attracts her when she is a college junior may have no appeal when she has obtained her PhD. â€" As she gains advanced training and confidence in her. ability to master an exciting field of study and an important job, she may not want to marry many men who would have been perfectly acceptable earlier in her life. So, we come up with this important fact: She is not less desirable in the eyes of men, far from it, but she is now a woman who finds fewer men desirable, or acceptable, to her. â€" For girls contemplating careers in the sciences, this is something to keep in mind â€" the chances of a happy marâ€" riage would be greatly improved by postponing the choice of a mate until after their advanced training is comâ€" pleted. Among the married women with professional engineering degrees, as among women physicians, close to six out of 10 are married to men who are in their own or closely related fields. And it isn‘t only because the unmarried women in ‘the sciences are a lot more fussy about the men they marry, but also because marriage is not their exclusive goal in life. They have other vital interests to fulfill. A (Mr. Fellows is the founder of the Human Resource Development Instiâ€" tute, P.O.
