In conjunction with that dinner, local resident Rae Rhodes offers these comments on the Kâ€"W music scene in the second of a twoâ€"part opinion piece. ur young singer may have some stage experience, a degree in vocal performance from a university, but this is not yet enough. To have a career this is not yet enough. To have a career presupposes that the voice has outstanding qualities, not only must the singer have superb technique, but a natural good voice to start with. At age 22, the voice may be quite small, but by age 28 it may have gained enormously in strength and volume as muscles develop; it doesn‘t just happen overnight. Our young singer must be able to act, move, dance, and hardâ€"working, patient, tenacious and ambiâ€" tious. And he needs to have money for voice lessons over a period of years. What happens if our young singer doesn‘t have all it takes? Many performance graduâ€" ates become teachers, either privately, or in the school system, and as many also have piano qualifications, they are doubly equipped to earn a living. Others find employment as church soloists, choir directors, typists, or wait on tables to pay for further voice lesâ€" AVY B Canadian Opera Company (COC). This is a sporadic job, as only seven operas are staged: this season in September/October, January/February, April and June. Not all operas require a large chorus, so a singer may only be hired for three operas, yet the rehearsals are in the daytime for maybe 3 weeks at a time, making it very hard to hold down any usual type of job. â€" Their teacher may encourage them not to give up, but to audition and keep knocking at the door. Is our stageâ€"struck singer being ‘ledâ€"on‘? Many voices are maturing through the 20s, and it might suddenly blossom into something wonderful ... or it might not. The route taken by some of our more successful singers has been through entering prestigious competitions, such as the Edward Johnson Music Competition, or the Young Mozart Singers Competition (of the Guelph Spring Festival and the COC respectively. Local winners of the first have been Anita Noelâ€"Antscherl, Donna Trifunovich, Kathleen Brett and Daria Salemka in recent years. Then the young singer can gain stage experience in opera in a small company like Canada Opera Piccola in Victoria, B.C. which has employed quite a few from Waterloo in the last 5 years. But there are pathetically few places where the young artist can train and be paid at the same time. he COC auditions across the country I to find the best voices for its Ensemâ€" ble. Similarly, L‘Atelier Lyrique de l‘opera de Montreal also auditions widely. Both opera training groups give their particiâ€" pants the chance of eventually singing roles with the parent company. Denis Giesbrecht and Christopher Coyea, both trained in Waterloo, are two of the eight artists in the ensemble, and Maureen Browne is at the Atelier. Donna Trifunovich may find it hard to decide to return to Canada. At the moment it is impossible to make a comparable living here for three reasons. irstly, there are no opera companies which hve performances 30 or more weeks a year and employ their own singers on a regular basis for the leading roles. This just doesn‘t exist in North America. There are plenty opera administrators, (artisâ€" tic directors, secretaries, publicity managers) on annual contracts, but no opera singers apâ€" parently. There is a rare chance to hear baritone Ted Baerg, along with upâ€"andâ€"coming soprano Kathleen Brett who is training here, and mezzo Carol Ann Feldstein if you attend the Kâ€"W Opera Guild‘s Valentine Dinner with Music, Feb. 13, at the Vahalla Inn.
