The Mission, now at the Lyric, is a beautifully thot historical epic which deals with 18th Century Imperitalism in South America, written by Robert Bolt, (Man For All Seasons.) Like Seasons, fateful hbero Sir Thomas More, Bolt‘s premise in the Mission essentially concernas the internal spiritual struggle, of two men against Jeremy Irons plays pacifist Jesuit priest Father Gabrie! â€" a sober figure whose only trust lies in the power of the prayer. (If might is right, then love has no place in the world, says Gabriel.) Gabriel‘s adversary is Rodrigo Mendora, a bloodâ€"thirsty mercenary/slave trader, played by Robert De Niro. Mendoza commits family felony over matters of the fiesh and by his own pennance converts to Jesuit faith, yet cannot forget his pledge to the sword‘s sting. Mendoza and Gabriel strive to bring civilization to Indian tribes deep in exotic, lush South American jungle. De Niro though he makes a valiant effort is simply not suited to Mendoza‘s character, much more effective in his usual streetwise acting armour which has made him a quality actor. obsession with power and greed continues the single most destructive evil in the world.
