PAaEa :namoo‘m mm Rodney Gilchrist Chronicle Staff On the heels of encouraging statistics released at the beginning of December which showed a decrease in the number of people charged with drinking and driving in 1986, Waterloo Regional Police have released figures that show a disappointing increase in drinking and driving charges over the Christmas season from 1985. In comparison to last year's "Christmas blitz", when police stopped 4,337 vehicles and laid 20 drinking and driving charges while handing out 30 roadside suspensions, this year's figures indicate a two per cent increase in drinking and driving charges and an approximate increase of 33 per cent in roadside suspensions. These figures will put the total number of charges laid in 1986 for drinking and driving up to approximately 57, and for roadside suspensions to m from 428 spot checks. Although the statistics seem alarming at first glance, Sgt. Bill Chipman, who is in charge of traffic with the Waterloo Regional Police, says it is difficult to draw conclusions from these figures. Under their RIDE (Reduce impaired Driving Everywhere) program, local police stopped 3,105 vehicles over a M-day-period from Dec. 1 to Dec. 31, charging 20 people with drinking and driving and handing out 39 roadside 12-hour-licenee suspensions. "Becausie the some number of people were charged this yiiar when we stopped less vehicles, it would appear that more people were drinking-tdriving this, year they last year." said Chipman. Chipman reports that no particular area in the region was worse than another. "What we found was on one mt. in one area it was busy, then the next it wasn't," said Chlpman. “This was true for all areas - it varied from day to day." was was ttteuirst iear that the RIDE program was conducted throughout the year. Previously the majority of the checks were done in‘pecernber and dying Oktoberfest. - U _ - M 7 “Noni if this is ahead; it would be {bad thing," said Chipman. "But 24 days is I short term - you would have to do a survey over a longer period to be able to draw conclusions." _ "We'il continue the program through 187,†said Chipman. "On weekends and busy days of the week - we want to keep people who drink and drive of! the road." 9 Willow St. Waterloo At 4: an on the afternoon of Friday, Feb. 28.
