BULLETIN BOARC UW sociologist wins Casgrain award A University of Waterioo sociology proâ€" fessor, Dr.. Susan McDaniel, has been named winner of the first Therese Casgrain research fellowship, offered by the social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SCHRCC). The award is to encourage research on women and social change in Canada. The award is named after a distinguished Canadian politician and women‘s rights leader (also the recipient of an honorary degree from Waterloo in 1974). Mme. Casgrain served in the Canadian senate, and also in La Ligue des Droits de la Femme, Province of Quebec. She was the first woman ever to lead a political party in Canada (the Quebec CCF),; she was also the founder of the Quebec branch of the Voice of Women. McDaniel has been at UW for more than 10 years. Her research interests include gender roles, demography, medical sociolâ€" ogy and aging. She is the author of a recently published book on Canadian social problems, and has written extensively on fertility, adoption, abortion, aging and women‘s issues; she is frequently invited to speak to groups across Canada. Earlier this year she gave the keynote address at the Zonta conference held in Waterloo. This month she gave the last lecture in UW‘s Arts lecture series. Hearing Society introduces new interpreting service The Canadian Hearing Society has inâ€" troduced a Sign Language Interpreting Service, offering full, clear communication between hearing and hearing impaired individuals, which benefits all involved. A Professional Sign Language Interâ€" preter provides confidential, nonâ€"particiâ€" pant service to all consumers, both hearing and hearing impaired. Through such serâ€" vices, the hearing impaired population is able to gain accessibility to the surrounding community. An interpreter is found in a variety of settings; medical, legal, employâ€" ment, social service, business, and educaâ€" The sign language interpreter facilitates communication between persons who do not share the same language. In order to accomplish such a task, the interpreter must be fluent in both languages, English and Sign Language. What is Sign Language? It is a complex visualâ€"gestural language having its own syntax, grammar, and sentence structure. It is referred to as ‘American Sign Language‘ (A.S.L.). This is known as the native language of deaf Canadians and Americans. There is a ‘Code of Ethics‘ to be followed by interpreters. It‘s purpose is to provide guidelines and in so doing to ensure quality of service. This is essential for developing and maintaining professional standards. Three main concepts are: confidentiality, impartiality, and faithfullâ€" ness. When using a sign language interâ€" preter, remember the following guidelies: â€"speak directly to the hearing impaired â€"speak clearly and at a normal rate of â€"refrain from looking or watching the interâ€" preter ; â€"do not ask for the interpreter‘s opinion â€"do not hold personal conversation with the interpreter REMEMBER, everything that you say will be interpreted. For more information regarding Interâ€" preter Services, please contact the Canaâ€" dian Hearing Society at the Waterloo Regional Branch, 744â€"6811 (voice), 744â€"6901 (TDD). _/A _ YOUNG DRIVERS ; W \ OF CANADA l DRIVER TRAINING 0 579â€"4800 \_ Next Course 8 JAN. 5/87 WISHES YOU HAPPINESS New Year‘s greetings to all our fine customers.
