Ross MacDonald Chronicle Special Eye Ot The Zombie John Fogerty Warner Bros/WEA The cover tells it all. From the down-home setting on the front of last year's Centrefieid - a photo that intimated the wistful nature of the music inside - the creature on Eye Of The Zombie suggests there is something much darker within, a raging beast ready to break loose. As it turns out, there are actually two beasts - Fogerty himself and the system he rails against. This is Fogerty's most caustic statement to date, an incisive denunciation of the media (Headlines"), lax weapon control (“Violence Is Golden"), and musicians who have sold out to marketing campaigns ("Soda Pop"). While not as immediately accessible or endearing as Centrefield, Eye Of The qubie is uncomprising, socially conscious rock and roll. It can't be ignored. Skylarking XTC Virgin Records In the late 1970s, Squeeze and XTC were the vanguard of the British pop movement, the heirs apparent to the throne abdicated by a foursome from Liverpool many years before. Quirky, intelligent, and with a keen ear for the radio, popdom appeared to be theirs for the taking. Alniost a decade later, XTC is still searching for its niche. The Rainmakers Rainmakers Mercury / Polygram Rundgren is the Ann Landers of production advice and like XTC, was once at the forefront of the pop intelligentsia. Here, he applies his own hooks and wealth of studio knowledge to Andy Partridge's instrumental whimsies and vocal colourations. The results are more focused than anything either party has done in recent years but the buoyancy that once lifted XTC above the ordinary is missing. It's only a faint reminder of how brilliant these guys used to be. Not many new releases sound like an immediate hit, but The Rainmaker sure does. This Missouri foursome plays an infectious brand of no frills blues-country-rock, featuring lots of meaty slide guitar, a relentless baélrbeat, and lyrics that have something to say. Lead singer/songwriter Bob Walkenhorst covers plenty of topics - he splices together dibs and dabs of Americana - and presents them in a lyrical style reminscent of Lloyd Cole. There are references to the bible CLet My People Go"), the Hyatt hotel tragedy in Kansas City and 1967 space launch ("Rockin' At The T-Dance") and Mark Twain, Harry Truman and Chuck Berry meeting on the Mississippi C'Downstream"). And even though his prose has a tendency to overreach, the music more than compensates. One of the year's best. f [22.1†ja, W Q 3 Fruit Juices 885-1 030 [iLig 'u"')))')" 140 Dearborn PL, WIoo.
