CANTON (ll)ptoNeega' M ryirNty LoNcorao,, FOSGATE Mars Zavaroo Chronicle Special Each year the prestigious Caldecott medal is awarded for the best children's storybook. This year, “The Polar Express" was the book chosen to receive this honor. The story begins with the narrator recalling a Christmas long ago when he began to wonder. "is there really a Santa Claus?" Before he falls asleep on Christmas eve he hears a noise outside his window. When he dashes to look, he sees a huge ghostly train he feels compelled to board. It's the -Polar Express headed for the North Pole with passengers composed of children about his age, dressed in pyjamas and night gowns. After the train speeds through vast, snowy expanses it finally arrives at the North Pole - a city composed entirely of elves. 7 As the children leap from the train Santa is there and asks each one what they would like for Christmas. The boy asks for one bell from the great sleigh. As midnight approaches, Santa is prepared to leave for his momentous journey. Later, when the boy looks for the bell, he only finds a hole in his pyjama pocket. Christmas morning a small gift awaits the boy labelled "From Mr. C." Of course it's the bell from Santa's sleigh but only he and his sister can hear it ring - his parents cannot. In the sad and beautiful ending the adult narrator says the bell still rings for him every Christmas. Illustrations are large with un- defined edges in soft, dream-like colours. For ages 5 to 9.
