Canada is represented by Canada Two but Bill Goman, son of Betty and Wem on University. almost had his yacht, True North, selected to represent our country. Bill was the co-designer of True North as he is an expert on superstructure (rigging, sails) design for yachts. The Gomans have two other sons who are vice-presidents: Terry with CNR and Michael with Bramelea Malls in Houston. Their daughter is married. If you are looking for a colorful Christmas gift, you may find it at the new "Cheese Treet†shop on Dupont. Marg and Edward Tasci specialize in Canadian and Imported cheeses with gift baskets for Christmas. They also serve light lunches in what reminds me of an English Tea Room. Marg says they have expanded the business as they already have a similar shop in Kitchener. it is that time of year again when we are obliged by the Waterloo City bylaw to clear the sidewalk of snow in front of our homes. I never had that problem in Montreal, Toronto, or Stratford. We note the Guelph citizens want the bylaw rescinded too. Since the city often fails to clear the "open strips" and many can't clear their section, surely the small sidewalk municipal plows could be introduced. We visited the clubhouse of the RCAF veterans' #404 Wing on Weber as they have to make a December 11 decision on a city offer to turn the place into a Senior Cititzen Centre. The #404 executive is: Howard Irailntata, John Ness, Victory Snowden, Andrles Esenbergs. Douglas Melchln, and Stanley Stein. Miss Eleanor Davis is the officer in charge of the Canadian Citizenship omee in the Waterloo Post Office. Eleanor tells me that she processed over 3,000 applicants in the past year for the local area. She points out that her office is not an immigration centre but rather a place where a foreigner may apply for "citizenship". Once the application is approved, they take the "oath of citizenship" in one of the Federal governmnet citizenship courts. Critics tend to say all the right things for the wrong reasons, and I've had so many reviews through the years. Not all of them know what they're talking about. But the toughest guy, one of the best critics of all time, is Virgil Thompson. Now, he knows his music inside out and backwards, and I'm always so flattered by his reviews," said Miller, during a recent phone interview from his New York office. Mr. Sing-Along makes his annual visit to deck the halls out at Centre In the Square Dec. 12, joining the K-W Symphony and special guests, the K-W Philharmonic choir, for a Yuletide music celebration of carols, classical and contemporary. "We'il be doing Vaughan Williams' Greensleeves. I've always been fond of him. The thing I like best about him is the fact he blends classical (melody) with modern approach. I Critics certainly have a way with words, especially when it comes to New York's legendary oboe player Mitch Miller. Miller has worn many hats in the business, beginning as an oboe master, progressing to radio, television, and behind the scenes to become one of the country's most important record producing stalwarts of all time. Coral Andrews Chronicle Special This effervescent performer/conductor/ arranger/ bursts out laughing when he hears some of the adjectives used to describe his flair. One thing critics agree upon is Miller's incredible energy resource and his love of music, which has led him around the world. “I raised a lot of hell then. I'd say 'that doesn't sound right. Do it this way. Do it that way.' I just wasn't satisfied. There had to be a better way of doing it and I found it. Wasn't l a pain in the ass. With musicians 95% of the stuff is right. But editing and tightening makes all the difference. Conducting isn't fast, slow, long or short - it's a good mechanical performance. I give the orchestra freedom to be themselves. But I have to strenghten those weak passsages. That's my Job, and my right." The Centre in the Square program includes the famed Deck the Halls fugue, the Hallelujah chorus from Handel's Messiah, and selections from the "real Wizard of Oz, not The Wiz." Miller, the performer, is also known as an orchestrator and stickler for perfection when it comes to production. He launched the careers of Patti Page, Doris Day, Jo Stafford, Tony Bennett, Leslie Uggams and Rosemary Clooney, and countless others. His obsession with the right sound and harmony earned him a distinguished feather in his tweed cap, as a cut above influence behind the grooves. "There's a popular show in England called Desert Island. If I had a chance to take one composer to a desert island, I'd pick Mozart, then Bach, then Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. But I just love Mozart. The movie Amadeus did something wonderful for his music. It made the rest of the world aware of his genius." Miller learned something from every conductor, every composer, and he loved them all. mean, he's stark if he has to be. To me he's Britain's Sibelius, or Sibelius is a Finnish Vaughan Williams." 558335-4280
