Politicians favorite target for Donato $39."" It takes Donato approximately one and a half hours to complete on of his cartoons. The length of time it takes to pick a subject "depends on whether it‘s pure Columbian or not", he says. Actually all his ideas come directly from the news of the day. ‘"I really love getting up in the morning and going to work. I can honestly say each day is different,""‘ he said. Yeah, sure. But why the book? ‘"‘Cigarette money for another year, why else." ‘"‘Trudeau called me a son of a bitch. That was quite an honor,‘‘ laughed Donato. PET, the Sun‘s affectionate abbreviate for Trudeau, continues to be Donato‘s allâ€"time favorite subject with Joe Clark, Brian Mulroney and the late John Diefenbaker close behind. The more difficult subjects are John Turner, Don Mazankowski and David Peterson who, accordâ€" ing to Donato, "has a face like a bowl of porâ€" ridge." Donato‘s successful career began in 1965 when, by a stroke of luck, he submitted a cartoon to the editor of a small Ontario weekly newspaper. After honing his skills on the community scene for years, he finally made the switch to fullâ€"time cartoonist in 1973. His barbed drawings are now seen across the country five times a week. A figure‘s "behind the scenes"‘ business is the only area which Donato will not attack. And even then, in such cases as the splitâ€"up of Pierre and Margaret Trudeau, he will draw a cartoon if it can be carried out tastefully, allowing the subject to share in the laugh. During his Sun stint, Donato has had 10 cartoons rejected by the editorial board and has been slapped with ‘"only‘" three lawsuits. But Royal Doulton, Conrad Black and "the entire Italian community", all withdrew their suits shortly after. There have ;gen other tense moments though. ‘ "I try and convey in a cartoon what the man on the street is thinking. And as long as there is political news, I‘ll have no problem doing that," he said. . Donato, the witty syndicated Toronto Sun cartoonist, appeared at the University of Waterloo last week to plug his new book "Chins and Needles*", a review of Brian Mulroney‘s first two years as Canadian Prime Minister. Exhibiting much of the same cynical humor that has made him a household name, Donato sketched continually while answering the quesâ€" tions of a handful of appreciative students in the Campus Centre. Toronto Sun cartoonist Andy Donato sketches tormer Quebec Premier Rene Levesque, much to the delight of a small gathering at UW last week.
