VOLLEYBALL (WOMEN) The WLU Lady Hawks Volley- ball team began their 1986-87 regular season on a winning note by beating the host Brock Badgers last Thursday in St. Catharines. WLU roundup To K-W‘s first evewear boutique Mark Bryton Chronicle Staff The talent-laden Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks soccer team has placed an unprece- dented six players on the Ontario Universities Athletic Association all-star team, a feat which unfortunately is overshadowed by the team's unexpected demise in the OUAA finals. Laurier's bid tor a second OUAA title came to a crashing thud Sunday as the University of Toronto Blues blasted a pair of late second- half goals en route to a 2-0 victory in Hamilton. Coupled with the previous knowledge that a panel of his peers had selected half a dozen of his players to the OUAA all-star squad, Hawk coach Barry Lyon was understandably upset with the outcome of the championship match. 'im very disappointed. This is the most talented team I've ever had. -sAtight now I'm kind of second guessing myself. With all the talent we had, one would have thought we could win it all/' said Lyon. Selected to the ll-man Ontario team are: sweeper Peter Gilmlan, fullback Kevin Kup- pers, midfielders Peter Mackie and Lyndon Hooper and forwards Roy Abraham and Frank Anagnostopoulos. All six are in their rookie seasons. "The one bright spot is only Barry MacLean graduates, all of the other players are eligible to return," said Lyon. - A - Sunday's game got off to an electrifying start as both teams had a golden opportunity to jump into an early lead in the first minute. Toronto had the first chance when, only seconds after the kick off, a ball was jetted over the outstretched arms of Laurier keeper Uwe Kraemer only to go off the crossbar. The team travels to Guelph on Thursday, November 13th, where they will face the Gry- phons at 8:00 p.m. SOCCER (WOMEN) Varsity team member Blair Fowlie made Laurier history when she became the first fe- male soccer player at WLU to be named to a league all-star team. Fowlie, a talented "Sweeper" for the team was named to the West Division First Team All-Stars last week. lndcpondonl Optician Thom-I J. D'Arry Laurier had a glorious chance of their own only seconds later. - A _ That opportunity turned out to be wasted however, as Laurier veteran Henry Bout fired a penalty kick five feet over the crossbar. The miss was his first in three seasons and according to Lyon could have been the turning point of the match. "Coaches in the East division had told me Toronto would likely fall apart if they got behind early. They're not a fight back team and tend to argue amongst themselves if they get behind. But we missed our chances," said Lyon. The difference on Sunday seemed to be a tactical decison made by Blues coach Jim Lefkos. Toronto abandoned its first half strategy of trying to go through Lauriers' powerful midfield and opted to attempt long balls in the second half. The move was rewarded in the 73rd minute when Tom Lizarou headed a corner kick behind Kraemer. Toronto nailed down the victory five minutes later when Mark Purdy converted an easy chance into an insurance goal. At that point, says Lyon, Laurier was "done like din- ner." "They (Toronto) were probably the most talented team we've seen all year but they're still not as talented as we are. They took advantage of their chances however, and that is the name of the game," said Lyon. Laurier reached Sunday's match-up by defeating Carleton Ravens 1-0 on Friday. Mackie scored an extra time marker to lift Hawks to the win. Toronto qualified by dumping McMaster Marauders 1-0. Blnesvnow host the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union championship this weekend.
