PAGE 34 - WATERLOO CHRONtCLE. WEDNESDAY, "OVEMBER lit, ‘986 After Hawks and Gryphs knotted at one after one period Saturday, Gowing was perturbed to watch his club fall behind 3-2 heading into the third. But they managed to draw even midway through the period and Terry McCutcheon rifled the gamewin- ner at 17:34. A powerplay goal at 18:25 sealed the victory. Other Hawk marksmen during the contest were Greg Puhalski with a pair, Paul Smith and Peter Black. ll Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawk hockey coach Wayne Gowing was an editor, he'd probably send the story back to his players right now with instructions to alter the script. kr Certainly Gowing is happy his troops are off to a 4-0 start this year heading into tonight's game in London against Western Mustangs-but the veteran coach sees a few glitches in the Hawk machine he'd like to see corrected. Basically, what Gowing is looking for is consistently tough yet well-disciplined play from his troops for 60 minutes each game-the type of play he saw from the Guelph Gryphons Saturday despite the fact Hawks rallied to triumph 5-3 at Waterloo arena. "That was a game that Guelph played very well, very hard and disciplined," said Gowing, whose club got a pair of late third-period goals to pull out the victory. "Meanwhile, we're just not showing up for 60 minutes lately, we seem to be headed to becoming one of those 'big play' type of teams, and I don't know how far teams like that can go." The victory leaves Hawks in second place in league standings with two games in hand over the 5-O-1 York Yeomen. 'Big play' mentality not Gowing's favorite Hawks undefeated "When we are challenged to play, we can be a very capable team, but what I'd like to see tight now is our club showing a little more authority, in deciding the tempo of the game," said Gowing. Hawks will get that opportunity tonight when they venture to London to do battle with Mustangs. In two exhibition games between the clubs this year, Hawks won 4-1 and Mustangs squared with a 6-4 empty net win in UW's tournament. Notes: Hawks make a Kingston junket for weekend games Friday against Queen's and Saturday against RMC...WLU continues to get excellent goaltending from Chris Luscombe and back-up Rob Beatty, who have combined for a 2.00 GA in the first four games. "We're a long way from the playoffs but a game like this (Western) may ultimately decide how we finish," Gowing noted. "What it will also do is help us find out about what kind of a team we really are, and whether we have to be prepared to make ad- justments.†Guelph Grphon torward Marty Morelli goes for a spill in front of WLU goalie Chris Luscombe during Saturday's heavy-hitting contest at Waterloo Arena.
