In the October issue of Chatelaine, she was chosen as one of eight "Women to Watch" in Alberta. In this new novel main character Arachne is a saleswoman peddling "Women's Comfort" a line of underwear to general stores in small prairie towns of Alberta. Dots, stripes, lace, frills and logos all sold to spark up the lives of farmer's wives and daughters, but ironically, she refuses to be her own best customer. In Aritha Van Herk's new novel, "No Fixed Address" we meet such a character. Award- winning author Van Herk was born in Alberta and graduated from the University of Alberta with a BA and MA in English. After two former novels, "Judith" and "The Tent Peg", she was chosen as one of Canada's 10 most promising young authors in the Under 45 con- test. Mary Zavaros Chronicle Special To read a novel is to engage in the world of fantasy. Is there someone somewhere who is completely free to live as they choose, set their own work pace and time schedule? The answer is yes, in the world of fiction. Like the corny and ribald travelling sales- man jokes, the free-wheeling heroine attracts men in every town either with her 1959 classic Mercedes, or her unbridled antics. She dithers, blanches, writhes and flirt:, - always unpredictable, impossible to pin down. 579-4800 - We offer supplies & classes for quilting, counted cross-stitched, Folk Painting & Stencilling ALSO: custom-quilts, curtains, decorator wall hangings, pillows & light upholstering custom cabinetry by Tom Miller Country Gifts - baskets, pictures, folk art, rugs SEE You SATURDAY Miller's Country Store Ltd. . She sees Thomas as her one link with stability for a life of marriage, kids, house in the suburbs a lifestyle she thinks about but can't quite buy. Two uproarious events are a dinner with Thomas' parents to dine on food she has never eaten with an array of cutlery she cannot use. The other is the "Ladies Comfort" award banquet where the action escalates and mounts into a frenzied free-for-all. Up to this point in the story, all is somewhat credible until Van Herk crosses the undefined line of make-believe into the absurd. Consider this course of events: Arachne kidnaps one of her lovers - a man old enough to be her grandfather. cashes a cheque for $25,000 co-signed by a stranger she meets in the bank, shares a motel room with a hitchhiker and a pet bear. What is real and unreal becomes an undefined blur even to Arachne. Finally her obession is pushed to the limit with miles of driving to the Yukon to end or continue her amorous journey. She may still be driving around up there for all we know. Those who reject the world of fantasy will not enjoy this book! Is it really possible to have no fixed ad- dress? No Fixed Address.
