PAGE 20 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1986 Rhythm, strength, coorcination are all essential if you‘re going to be a good dancer, says David Entwistle. Melodee Martinuk photo (Continued from page 18) I was taking classes three nights a week. Now I‘m here all the time,"" he said. Entwistle has also gone on to many more competitions, and as a duo or part of larger groups, has won numerous awards. Local musical audiences may remember Entwistle from his participation in Kâ€"W Musical Productions staging of Carousel last year. The high point of his career so far occurred this summer, when Entwistle was selected out of hundreds of applicants to dance in the musical revue at Canada‘s Wonderland. "It‘s as close to professionalism as I‘ve gotten so far, and it was great," said Entwistle, who was the youngest dancer in the show. Entwistle admitted that the road to becoming a dancer has not always been a smooth one. Not the least of the obstacles he encountered was the stereotype often applied to male dancers. First he had to deal with his own attitude, then he dealt with his acquaintances. "At first the image bothered me a lotâ€"â€"one time I almost quit. It was my first competition and I didn‘t want to wear the costume Margo (Smithâ€" director of the school) wanted me to wear. Now I know that‘s how you dress when you‘re a dancer; everybody wears the Lycra jazz pants or tights, so it doesn‘t bother me any more," he said. Three performances of Hanâ€" del‘s "Messiah," the world‘s mostâ€"loved oratorio will be perâ€" formed by Mennonite Mass Choir XIL at Kitchener‘s Centre in the Square on Saturday, Nov. 29 and Sunday, November 30. Professional soloists Henriette Schellenberg, Margaret Kuhl, Dennis Giesbrecht and Ted Baerg will be featured with the 400â€"voice choir, sponsored by Menno Singers, a community choir of Conrad Grebel College and accompanied by members of the Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo Symâ€" phony Orchestra. ‘*Messiah," wi?n its jubilant choruses and brisk rythmic enâ€" ergy of the Baroque, has come to represent oratorio‘s zenith in the public imagination. A decade later "Messiah‘"‘ was again performed in celebration of Mennonite Mass Choir‘s 10th Anniversary under conductor Jan Overduin, on the music faculty at Wilfrid Laurier Uniâ€" This year‘s choir will be conâ€" ducted by William H. Janzen, conductor of Menno Singers since 1984. This past July, Janzen conducted massive choral and instrumental forces in a stunning performance of Benjamin Britâ€" ten‘s "War Requiem" at Centre in the Square, as part of Mennonâ€" ite bicentennial celebrations in Canada. _Several of the soloists have already appeared with Mennonâ€" ite Mass Choir. My friends were always great, but the guys who didn‘t know me, who have this macho image, at the beginning it was tough," he said. Entwistle used a direct attack to deal with this problemâ€"he participated in a school show, using a routine which showed the strength required to dance.‘‘They got a different view of it," he said. The 17â€"yearâ€"old Grand River collegiate student has his career very clearly charted. Now he is is training for the Mr. Dance competition, a major competition in the U.S., which will mean "a lot of exposure if I do well. * After graduation from high school next year, he plans to head for the show lights of Toronto and maybe New York. Talk of auditions, cattle calls, agents, exposure and commercials is now the norm. ‘"It was the only way to get the guys to understand. Now at the school, if they mention my name, it‘s Dave the dancer. They remember me for my dancing. I‘ve made an impression on the guys. After they see the reactions of the girls, there are probably a lot of guys who would dance if they had the rhythm and ability."
