Swann speaker at conference on Rum Dr. Peter Swann, director of The Seagram Museum in Waterioo, Ontario, will be the . keynote speaker at a conference on Rum in Yarâ€" mouth, Nova Scotia Oct. 23 and 24. The conference, organized by the Federation of Nova Scotian heritage and enâ€" titled ‘"Rum by Gum", will explore many aspects of rum in the Maritimes from earliest times to the presâ€" ent. Special papers will be given on: rum in the colo nial period, interpreting Louisbourg‘s cabarets and auberges, rum and the liâ€" quor laws and the law in general as it has related to rum, rum and the economy particularly with respect to Atlantic Canada and the Caribbean, rumâ€"running in the Maritimes in the Prohibâ€" ition era, the technology of rum production, the design of the ships used in the legal and illegal trade, rum and the slave trade, and the folklore inspired by rum. Swann‘s keynote address will begin with an introducâ€" tion on the building of The Seagram Museum. Howevâ€" er, since rum is only one aspect of wines and spirits he will outline how a whole museum could be built on the fascinating subject of rum and the part it has played in the economy, soâ€" cial customs, history, and art of the western world. Marteniuk as dean of the faculty of Human Kinetics and Leisure Studies. He will serve a second threeâ€"year term beginning July 1. The reappointment was apâ€" proved by UW‘s board of governors, Oct. 7. Marteniuk, 43, is completâ€" ing a first term that began in July 1982. Born in Edmonâ€" ton, he came to UW in 1973 and served as kinesiology department chairman from 1975 to 1977. His research interests are in human motor performance and learning. David Crombie to discuss Canadian mosaic David Crombie, secretary of state and the former ‘"tiny, perfect‘" mayor of Toronto, will take a political look at the Canadian mosaic in a talk Oct. 24 at Wilfrid Laurier University. He is the dinner speak at the oneâ€"day ninth annual conference of the Ontario Association of Sociology and Anthropology, meeting this year at Laurier. Porter‘s widow, Marion Porter, herself a sociologist, and other academics from across the province, will take part in the discussion. Dinner tickets, at $15, are available from the WLU sociology office. With sessions open to the public, Crombie will speak at the 7:30 closing dinner, held in the university‘s Paul Martin Centre.
