PAGE 4 - WATERLOO CtqtoNttXE, WEU§§OAY. OCTOBER s, 1m Rodney Gilchrist Chronicle Staff The Twin Cities are gearing up for the 18th edition of Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest. And with a bit of the old and a bit of the new, this year's Bavarian festival is headed for success. - The traditional tapping of the keg will begin the nine days of festivities, with over 70 cultural and sporting events, and 20 festhalls to visit. 9 Willow St. Waterloo From the time the keg is tapped Friday, Oct. 10, at 12 noon, the festival promises to be filled with something for everyone. __ New to this year's festival will be King Ludwig's Castle, inspired by the fairy tale castles built by King Ludwig II in Bavaria over 100 years ago. The castle, which is located next to Speaker's Corner in Kitchener, will double as an information booth. New as well is the designated driver cam- paign. Pepsi booths will be set up in each of the festhalls, where a designated driver can register and receive a button which will entitle them to free pop for the night. In Waterloo, the Oktoberfest Information Tent, which was set up for the weekend last year, will be around for the duration of the nine days, with cultural displays and information, located in Heritage Park, attached to the Uptown Blimp. Other highlights will be performances by the Vienna Choir Boys and the Moscow State Symphony, as well as the crowning Thursday of Miss Oktoberfest in the Humanities Theatre, the ninth annual barrel race through King Street Waterloo and Canada's only Thanksgiving Day Parade, with 30 floats and 20 marching bands - this year's parade is expected to draw 300,000 spectators and will be broadcast to over one million people across Canada. The parade will start at 8: 45 a.m. at King and Erb Streets in Waterloo and arrive at King and Cedar in Kitchener before the morning is out. Improved passport A new and improved Oktoberfest passport will be back this year. The passport, which allows a person to visit any of seven halls, from Monday to Thursday, for $10, cost $5 last year and was good for two days and six halls. Other special events this year will include Saengerfest, a singing festival featuring Ger- man folk and choral music, Strauss' Vienna, performed by the K-W Symphony Orchestra with dancers from the National Ballet School, an international speedskating championship com- petition with teams from Japan, Russia, France and Canada and Artfest, a display and sale of arts and crafts held in the Kitchener Farmer's Market. Dennis Yanke, publicity chairman for the festival committee, expects an improvement in the number of people attending in comparison with last year. "The numbers at some of the events last year were down," said Yanke. "But it was during the nights that the Blue Jays played so we won't have to worry about that this year."
