PAGE 28 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1986 As part of their first North American tour in 16 years, The State Symphony Orchestra of the U.S.S.R. will appear at Centre In The Square Thanksgiving Monday, Oct. 13 at 2: 30 p.m. Founded by special government decree, the U.S.S.R. State Symphony Orchestra‘s first concert took place 50 years ago, at the Moscow Conservatoire on October 5, 1936. The Orchesâ€" tra soon became an integral part of Soviet musical life participating in many important musical events and festivals. From its creation, the Orchestra became an active exponent of Soviet musical composition giving performances by Prokofiev, Shostaâ€" kovich, Khatchaturian and many others. The appointment in 1965 of Yevgeni Svetlanâ€" ov as chief conductor and artistic director heralded a growth of the Orchestra‘s artistic strengths and possibilities. During the war, the members of The Orchestra performed in Central Asia, the Urals, and Siberia providing concerts for the soldiers and for people in hospitals, factories and farms. Svetlanov‘s background included intensive training in piano, composition and conducting. His particular interest is the music of Tschaikovsky and he recently completed his ambition of recording the 6 symphonies of Tschaikovsky â€" performances which received rapturous acclaim. Svetlanov is also particuâ€" larly fond of the music of Shostakovich, Mussorgsky, and Rachmaninoff. The performance at The Centre Oct. 13 features: Mussorgsky‘s Prelude to Khovantâ€" china, Brahms‘ Double Concerto For Violin, Violoncello, and Orchestra in A Minor, Opus 102, and Shostakovich‘s Symphony No. 5 in D Minor, Opus 47. Special guest soloists are Natalia Gutman, cello and Oleg Kagan, violin. Vladimir Verbitsky is Deputy conductor. Davs Of PEMON OF Of4 RaTC . |oréranon sEST SuGet . p . (A5" SLGK DEPAR TORONTO TO: FT.
