"('il;t'a";i'o"s'u-;j'\'rersity and college population should not be stripped of its right to vote in municipal elections, Waterloo aldermen decided Monday night. Chronicle Staff The stronglyâ€"worded message is the city‘s reply to a provincial advisory committee studying muncipal elections. The committee‘s interim report, which council slowly dissected at their weekly meeting Monday, suggested that enumeration take place in May and June and that persons voting in municipal elections be required to reside in the city for at least six months prior to election day in October. Such rules would obviously wipe out thousands of student voters in Waterloo. We as a city council would like the students to be able to continue voting municipally in the city of Waterloo. We must oppose this," said Ald. Andrew Telegdi. â€" â€" e The city‘s response was a welcome one to University of Waterloo Student Federation representative Ian Mitchell, who had no problem at all convincing council to oppose the recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Municipal Elections. Council also opposed the issuance of tax credits for contributing money to municipal candidates. The provincial committee had recommended the provision of municipal tax credits be modelled after the Election Finances Act (Ontario). However, a 4â€"4 split vote of council caused Waterloo to not act upon the provincial recommenâ€" dation. Waterloo aldermen also voted against a recommendation which would allow a Waterloo mayorial candidate to spend $5,500 for campaign expenses plus 50 cents per elector. Similarly, all other candidates would be allowed to spend $3,500 plus 50 cents per elecâ€" tor. According to city treasurer Tom Stockie this would allow mayorality candidates to spend up to $30,500 and all other candidates up to $28,500. o S Co The majority of aldermen present Monday said they had spent less than $3,000 on their 1985 election expenses.
