Ross MacDonald Chronicle Special David Sylvian Gone to Earth Virgin Gone to Earth is the latest leg of David Sylvian‘s musical journey, a creative path that can be directly traced to Japan‘s Tin Drum. On Gone To Earth, Sylvian joins forces with technocrats Robert Fripp and Bill Nelson for four sides of Frippertronics, atmospherics and general technical excellence. Since leaving Japan, much of Sylvian‘s recorded work has been built around the exquisite soundscapes and intricate rhythm patterns he first experimented with on Tin Drum. Sides One and Two feature some of Sylvian‘s strongest vocal performances and can only be termed accessible when compared to the minimalist nature of sides Three and Four. Gone To Earth is at once stark, hypnotic, experimental, selfâ€"indulgent and above all, brilliant. Like its creator, it can‘t be ignored. Johnson, as everyone knows, is on a roll and like others before him, is using/abusing his television success as a springboard for a second career as a singer. Unfortunately, the performances aren‘t nearly as nasty since everybody prefers to be a good guy and Johnson‘s voice doesn‘t have the character to overcome such perfunctory accompaniment.
