Born and raised in Kitchener, Uttley has been an area resident all his life, other than a fourâ€"year period overseas during the Second World War. _ _ Before taking the job with the centre, he owned a dryâ€"cleaning business which he sold to a larger competitor. "I was in the dryâ€"cleaning business most of my life," said Uttley. ‘"‘Taking this job was a welcome change â€" I could finally get some sleep at night." One of the best Herman jokes Uttley is known for is when he put Herman halfâ€"way through the ceiling, leaving his lower half showing â€" people would stop and talk to him, thinking it was Uttâ€" ley. repairman, banker (considered an easy touch for those in need), friend, and (last but not least) a practical joker. "I‘ve met a lot of nice people here and made a good living," said Uttley. ‘"The city is a good place to work for." But Uttley‘s friends at the centre went for the last laugh when they held a surprise party for him last week, where they gathered together 65 of his friends, bosses and coâ€"workers (including Mayor Marjorie Carroll) and surprised him with an unusual gift â€" a bellyâ€"dancer who dragged him up for a dance. Now that he‘s retired, Uttley will travel, golf and learn how to type so that he can continue to write poetry â€" a hobby for the last 30 years. ® â€"32»>0 Program assistant Christine Barker, who has worked with Uttley for the last 11 years, said Uttley will be missed at the centre.
