PAGE 10 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 1986 ‘ e 3 R ' * hi When Ed Gibson started selling and servicing televisions he did it as a partâ€"time operation out of his home. There‘s nothing partâ€"time about Gibson TV today. Now, 30 years later, Ed is proudly supervising the opening of Gibson TV‘s second location, at the corner of Regina and Columbia Streets in Waterloo. Partners in the business are his wife, Betty, and two sons, Steven and Stuart. According to Ed, the secret to Gibson TV‘s success is the ‘"personalized service" they offer their customers. In short, it‘s not a place where salesmen sell you a television, then let you carry it off and set it up yourself. ‘‘We like to treat people the way we want to be treated ourselves, that‘s the reason why we‘ve grown," said Ed. "I still go out on deliveries myself. We will not sell a television set or a microwave in a It‘s a familyâ€"owned and operated business which pn_)mises__to ‘"treat you like family." Most importantly, now that they‘ve got 5,000 square feet of space to work with, instead of the 700â€"squareâ€"feet of the store they‘ve been in for the past 20 years, the Gibsons have expanded their product lines and now display products they couldn‘t before. ‘‘We picked up a new line of televisions, and we‘re also now carrying a line of stands, for microwaves and audio units. It‘s just a matter of the space available to us. In Kitchener it seemed we spent more "I‘ve had a lot of people say we (Gibsons TV) has a good reputation, and we‘ve worked hard for that," added 33â€"yearâ€"old Steven, who first started helping his father with the business almost 15 years ago. We‘ve had to hire people and train them to treat our customers as we always have in the past. We‘ve had to devise systems to make sure our people are doing their jobs the way they‘re supposed to. Up til now, because it was only family, we always knew it would be done right," said Steven. A more difficult adjustment, however, is the fact that the Gibsons won‘t be able to handle the whole show themselves anymore. For the past 30 years its just been the Gibsons at the store: first Ed; then Betty signed on to help with sales; finally, Steven joined the firm to help out in service and Stuart took over responsibility for sales. Now, with the two stores they‘ve had to hire three additional service and salesâ€" men. time moving things around then we did working.
