Although only in his early 30s, Mike Oldfield has a lengthy, albeit inconsistent track record. Tubular Bells, which became a commercial success as the soundtrack for The Exorcist, typified the Oldfield approach over the next few years. Deriving from his folk and rock roots, Oldfield created short melodies and then repeated them over and over to effect a number of moods and random shifts of tempo. The Complete Mike Oldfield covers the period from Tubular Bells up to and including his soundtrack for the Killing Fields. The four sides â€" Instrumental, Vocal, Complex and Live â€" demonstrate the spotty nature of his recorded work but also his growth as a composer and pop artist. Those who find Oldfield‘s instrumental epics cold and selfâ€"indulgent, will no doubt prefer the Vocal and Live sides. The Vocal side features his most accessible material, the short pop songs being the antithesis of his longâ€"winded inâ€" strumentals. While not for all tastes, The Complete Mike Oldfield is the perfect starting point for the uninitiated. And if nothing else, it‘s a practical compendium for anyone who finds some of his albums too darned long. Joe Jackson Big World A&M Like the title, Joe Jackson‘s musical habitat is of a similar magnitude. Blessed with the ability to tackle a number of genres with equal aplomb, Jackson‘s career has segued from rock to brief forays into jive, salsa and improvisationâ€" al jazz. And by taking the irreverent approach to the business of making records, it‘s been impossible to pigeonhole him. KING . â€" ‘l‘lig World is Jackson come full circle, a return, if only partial, to the rebel spirit of his Look Sharp! period. _ _ _ More importantly, however, these three sides (the fourth is blank) represent an aural resume of Jackson‘s numerous artistic changes. â€" s o Everything you needed to know about this gifted artist is here. Side one is vintage Jackson, the raucous rock recalling a time when he along with Elvis Costello and Graham Parker formed the vanguard of the British pop movement. Side two has a more melancholy tone, the moody lounge music providing the perfect vehicle for his romantic cyniâ€" cism. Overall, Jackson‘s voice has seldom sounded better and he proves once again there ain‘t nothin‘ this boy can‘t do. Only problem is, what does he do for an encore?
