Coral Andrews Chronicle Special ‘"Good morning survivors. Well, the Aâ€"Bomb went off and we‘re still here."" _ The time is 1950. The place is the Las Vegas desert. _____ _ The United States Civil Deâ€" fense boys are on the brink of dropping the first Aâ€"Bomb near the desert gunnery range. Las Vegas rural residents are filled with excitement and terror for what could be the biggest gamble of their lives as they watch the skies each morning for Woodside National Historic Park presents A Fall Harvest Weekend September 20â€"21 from 1â€"4: 30 p.m. _ The boyhood home of William Lyon Mackenzie King will host a weekend of activities and events guaranteed to revive the sounds and flavors of a Scottish harvest of the 1890s. e Saturday, view fall decoraâ€" tions and harvest activities in the historic kitchen. Chili sauce will Desert Bloom compelling analysis of Aâ€"bomb era Woodside Fall Harvest Movie review any sign of a mushroom cloud on the horizon. o â€" Las Vegas resident Jack Chissâ€" more lives in a mushroom cloud. _ To him, the Aâ€"Bomb is serious business. Chissmore a wounded war vetâ€" eran owns Desert Gas, a pumpâ€" ing station and the last stop before 300 miles of dessert. He‘s seen a lot of those ‘scientist types,‘ coming through his garage. Each night Chissmore in a drunken stup{)'r. still pretendâ€" ing he‘s fighting in the second world war, listens to his ham be prepared on the woodstove, using an original recipe. 5 e Sunday, corn is the focus with a Victorian outdoor corn roast and free corn on the cob. Homeâ€" made corn relish will be preâ€" pared from a tried and true favorite recipe. e Sunday, thrill to the sound of the pipes as entertainment is provided once again by a bagâ€" piper of the Hespeler Pipe Band. radio set for any minute signal of a ‘Commie‘ invasion, or the slighlesl hint of the impending Aâ€"Bomb explosion. But the real bomb is about to explode in Chissmore‘s domestic environment, as oldest daughter Rose Chissmore narrates the story of her tremendous personâ€" nal struggle and conflict with her stepâ€"father, Jack Chissmore, in Desert Bloom, now at Cineplex. Jon Voigt is excellent as the wizened, narrowâ€"minded Jack, in this bombshell statement about family strife and child abuse in the ‘50s. Annabelle Gish as Rose, is also powerful and natural as an awkward bookworm 13â€"yearâ€"old who does her best to endure her father‘s constant cruelty. Dessert Bloom brings back many memories to those who lived in this era. Narzted by Christine Lahti as the gfownâ€"up Rose who looks through her memory chest in flashback format, Dessert Bloom is a meaningful cinema, based on a novel by Eugene Corr. The movie‘s intensity and honesty are compelling to watch.
