Big Brothers released over a thousand balloons last Friday, from Speaker‘s Corner in Kitchener, as an indication of the thousands of kids needing Big Brothers across Canada. Rodney Gilchrist photo Rodney Gilchrist Chronicle Staff With the release of over a thousand balloons into the blue afternoon sky Friday, a plea for help for a desperate situation was sent as well â€" the pressing need for Big Brothers. _ _ _ September is Big Brothers month, and the release of the balloons with 140 other agencies across Canada is an indication of the thousands of boys who need Big Brothers. Bob MacLeod, the first Big Brother in Kâ€"W, was the founding secretary locally. “‘“'-l'\:-firi;fieâ€" benefit of being a Big Brother is the satisfaction of helping a boy who doesn‘t have an older brother or a father," said MacLeod, "the satisfaction of sharing his interests and watching him grow."‘ Big Brothers are required to commit three or four hours a week with a child, until he is 18â€"yearsâ€"old. _ _ _ D y â€""â€"WE sm&â€" have 10 volunteers per month," said Peter McGhee, executive director for the Kâ€"W branch. _ _ The t‘;l’;;;i;flofl: which has about 63 boys who need Big Brothers in Kâ€"W, find they are unable to enlist enough volunteers. _ _ _ "Gimmicks and i;;:_agâ€"é j.‘.ls,t, don‘t work for us. You can‘t get people of substance to get involved that way." _ _ _ _ _ Instead the 6r§inlufion relies on a straightâ€"forward appeal to men who have the time and concern to help make a boy more happy. _ _ _ If you would like to be a Big Brother, call 579â€"5150 â€" you could make all the difference in the world, to a boy who needs your friendâ€" Balloon release a symbolic plea for Big Brothers 9 Willow St. Waterioo Waterioo Chronicle Second Class Mail Registration Number 5540 Published every Wednesday by Fairway Press A Division of Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo Record Ltd. 225 Fairway Rd.
