Lowry‘s 1947 novel chronicles the last 12 hours in the life of the former British Consul in Cuerâ€" navaca, Mexico, on the Day of the Dead, Nov. 2, 1938. Lowry himself was a prodiâ€" gious drinker, possibly the most famous alcoholic author in literâ€" ary history, and the Consul in his novel consumed 61 ounces of alcohol over the 12 hours and was still standing, firing witticisms, fornicating and defying tyranny. "I am telling you something new about hell fire," Lowry boasted of his masterpiece about love and booze, heaven and damnation, before he drank himâ€" self into oblivion. The reading will take place at the Grad House where liquor is available. Portions of it will be taped for reâ€"broadcast.
