Their third album represents yet another change in direction. After collaborations with West Coast punk poet Chris D. â€" he produced their first album, The Days of Wine And Roses â€" and former Blue Oyster Cult producer Sandy Pearlman â€" he produced the last one, Medicine Show â€" the band has returned to playing strippedâ€"down rock and roll. The title is symbolic in that the dirgeâ€"like atmosphere of Medicine Show has given way to a tougher, aggressive guitar sound. Paul B. Cutler has replaced guitarist Karl Precoda and his production underscores his own concise, sinewy guitar fills. As usual, Steve Wynn writes songs that alternate between themes of hope (Dying Embers) and hopelessness (Drinking Probâ€" lem) and delivers them in a studied Lou Reed nasal style. In spite of its disconcerting nature, Out Of the Grey grows stronger with repeated listenings. This is no frills rock ‘n‘ roll from the other side of the tracks. FROM $2375 U.S. Big Country The Seer Vertigo /Polygram The critical reaction to The Seer reads like a broken record: great production as expected; great guitar as expected; same old worthwhile message as expected. The Seer has created a state of unanimity amongst critics and rightfully so. There is nothing here that we haven‘t come to expect from this Scottish foursome that singlehanâ€" dedly hopes to make Scotland a better place to live. There‘s the rousing anthems of hope and glory, Stuart Adamson‘s pseudoâ€"bagpipe guiâ€" tar heroics and the muscular rhythm work of Tony Butler and Mark Brzezicki. And that‘s the problem. The Seer breaks no new ground. If Steeltown was sides three and four of the Crossing, this is sides five and six. Granted, the passion once again seems genuine and the sound as usual is unique in its own way, but the formula is beginning to wear If I hadn‘t known otherwise, I would have said this is a great debut album. Unfortunâ€" ately, it‘s only a soâ€"so third album. _ I Let‘s hope that Big Country effects the desired social change and Adamson finally resolves his inner conflicts. Maybe then, and only then, will they give us a muchâ€"needed surprise. â€" VIC FOSTER‘S TRAVEL * CRUISE BASED ON DOUBLE OCCUPANCY e Airfare Toronto Heathrow (New Terminal) e Sagafjord 9â€"Day Canary Island Cruise . e London Hotel incl. breakfast e All transfers, porterage and taxes e Two great London shows e Welcome dinner in London e Preâ€"Cruise dinner in London e Transportation from London to Southampton ‘"Your Experienced Travel Agent" WATERLOO CHRONICLE.
