The inaugural Waterloo Reâ€" gion 50 mile ultramarathon on Sunday turned out to be a memorable one with the setting of a new Canadian masters reâ€" Terry Martin of Barrie, in his first year as a master at the age of 40, ran the fourâ€"lap, 50 mile course in five hours, 48 minutes and 32 seconds. Norm Patenaude of Massey, Ont., near Espanola, had set the previous record of 6:07.49 a year ago. Patenaude attended the event as a spectator and could only stand and watch as Martin came to the startâ€"finish line at the Laurel Conservation Area to take more than 19 minutes off his Only 12 runners competed in the race which began at 5:30 a.m., down from the 20 or 25 expected by race director Wayne Witt of the Waterloo County Amateur Athletic Association. But all 12 runners finished the race within the 10â€"hour time limit. Rob Apple, 25, of Ohio was second in 6:35.5, well ahead of third place finisher Jim Maganas of Michigan. The 58â€"yearâ€"old Maganas ran 120 miles in 24 hours last year. Runners from as far away as California competed in the race but there was one local entrant. Ken Lau, 24, of Waterloo ran the distance in 9:56.4 to finish his first ultramarathon in 12th place. Wally Herman of Ottawa was the oldest runner at 60 and he finished 11th in 9:42.11. All told, three runners were over 50. The next time the event is held â€"â€" and organisers aren‘t sure whether it will be annual or biannual â€"â€" could attract more runners when three different distances of 31, 50 or 61 miles are offered.
