Waterloo Pirates wound up their season in fine style with a third place finish in the sixâ€"team Ontario Baseball Association tyke ‘A‘ tournament over the weekend at Hillside Park. The host Pirates were not required to fight area teams for the right to represent their secâ€" tion of Ontario and were not considered a strong contender for play beyond the minimum two games in the double knockâ€" out event. Richard O‘Brien Chronicle Staff All was not as it should have been last Wednesday at Woodâ€" side Park, a facility that includes a swimming pool, soccer field and softball diamond. Athletics, Eagles and Balkans are in a threeâ€"way tie for first place and while the overall situation is a bit complicated, Athletics appear to have a good edge in the goals for and against department if tiebreaking mathâ€" ematics are necessary. Pirates, however, used strong hitting and timely pitching to beat Hamilton Mahoney twice by scores of 10â€"8 and 10â€"5. They lost 1â€"0 to Southwest London in their first meeting with that team, then lost 14â€"1 to that same London team to be eliminated in the semiâ€"finals. Waterloo Athletics were to have met Banat there in a Kitchener and District Soccer League second division game but the field was deemed unplayable after a rainstorm the previous night. *‘Somebody moved ‘the swimâ€" ming pool,"‘ joked Athletics‘ coach Dave Pearcey. Pearcey was at Woodside acting as linesâ€" man for a first division game between Leos and Beograd the night before his club was to play there and that game was shorâ€" tened not by rain but rather by an incident involving referee Tony Aguiar that led to an assault charge against a player. The game with Banat has been rescheduled for tonight at 7 at Woodside, leaving Athletics with a hectic pace in the last week of the season. Their final game of the schedule is Friday, just two nights later, when they meet Galt Eagles at Kinsmen Park. ‘‘We‘re going to have a tough game against Banat," said Pearâ€" cey, "and with Eagles we‘re even. They beat us in the Molson Cup and we beat them at home in a league game. It could go either way, but if the team plays like it did the last two games I‘m feeling more comfortable we can (finish first)." "If Eagles pick up their scorâ€" ing they can be a big challenge to the Balkans and if Balkans do the same they‘ll be a big challenge to us," said Pearcey, who is hoping for the direct entry into the first division that & first finish would give them. Athletics activity last week was limited to one practice and Pearcey wanted to have a "light training session"‘ on Tuesday to get players ready for the upcomâ€" ing games after the long weekâ€" ‘‘My light training sessions are not very light," said Pearcey. ‘‘They had one before the last game and it really showed up in that game." First place could go to Athletics In the tournament final Newâ€" irates exceed expectations market defeated London 12â€"1 as Doug Lunney, Danny Harrison and Paul Downing all put in strong displays of hitting. lan Taylor came through with a strong pitching performance. In their opening game, Pirates built an early eightâ€"run lead on the hitting of Jason Dupuis, Daniel Sullivan and Shawn Dieâ€" trich ‘along with some costly Hamilton errors. Their 1â€"0 loss to London was the best defensive game of the weekend and London squeezed in a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
