PAGE 12 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 6, 1986 Rodney Gilchrist Chronicle Staff For three hours last Sunday night, reality touched down in Waterloo. Music, and everything it can mean, stood and shook itself loose of the ugly trappings that have mutated its image into a twisted parody of art, to reveal an inner core of raw, unadultered beauty. Into a world where music is often seen as the hype and glitter that is produced in slick media packages (designed to make idols of people and money in large sums), stepped Willie P. Bennett â€" quenching the musical thirst of an audience, with a tall cool drink of pure talent. Willie P. Bennett‘s performance at the Princess Cinema Sunday, reâ€"established that music alone can be art at its best. Playing to a small gathering of about 40 at the Highâ€"tech but lowâ€"brow Bennett quenches thirst â€" with rare ‘pure‘ music 2 WEEKS ONLY WAREKHOUSE SALE Nâ€" mamm Serving You For 27 Years _ WA 886â€"2040 Free Parking Front and Rear e10RE ALAN RIGBY‘S Laâ€"Zâ€"Boy Gallery 46 King St. Rodney Gilchrist photo Laâ€"Zâ€"Boy SLEEPERS N., Waterloo e Loveâ€"seat size e Regular Double e Queenâ€"size We must make room. SAVE ‘100â€"5400 GENUINE Princess Cinema, Bennett and bassâ€"player Tom Griffith pumpedâ€"out a diverse array of songs with ease and comfort. Armed with only his acoustic guitar, harmonica, voice, wit and the subtle skill of Griffith on the fretless bass, Bennett treated the audience to two 45â€"minute sets, filled to overflowing with songs and humorous anecdotes â€" no flash, no drumâ€"kits and no hardâ€"toâ€"stomach ego trip. . Bennett, who started his career 12 years ago, has four albums to his credit. His most recent effort titled ‘"The Lucky Ones", was recorded in 1985 after a fourâ€"year absence from the music scene and is only available on cassettes that Bennett has made, and distributes himself. The four years that Bennett spent away from the performing end of the business were used to try to regain the master copies of his first three albums, which he only recently managed to do. He intends to reâ€"release the older albums and a new release that is a compilation of his best within the next year. s _ Bennett‘s music, which he jokingly refers to as "highâ€"tech but lowâ€"brow" is almost impossible to categorize. He plays country, blues, reggae, rock, folk and what is now known as "beat". Although the performer is often billed as a Canadian legend, he has experienced little in the way of commercial success. ____ _ S "There‘s a lot of different kinds of success," said Bennett. "I‘m still playing my music the way I want to, and to me that‘s the kind of success that counts." â€"‘"I‘ve had a large underground following for years," said Bennett ‘"And I don‘t want the type of success that most people talk about." â€" Next, Bennett will be travelling to Alberta to play at the Edmonton Festival. He hasn‘t been able to get backing for a major tour, because no one wants to back someone who won‘t change, and wants everything on his ‘"own terms‘". It‘s so common to see a good songwriter or band go through the large record label production line, and come out a pale imitation of themselves that Bennett prefers to make his music through the cottage industry system. Although music on a small scale might not bring Bennett the money or pseudoâ€"glory that sometimes goes along with being a "star‘"‘, it allows him to make music the way he wants to. And in an age when music and business have merged into a perverted travesty of what it could be, it is good to know there is still a performer that has so much natural magic that, after the show, his audience is reluctant to leave their seats. Polydor At the time, Emerson, Lake and Palmer seemed like a good idea. It was 1971, an anythingâ€"goes period of time when practically everyone was e_xperimenting. P maeeni t o en s t e mt Keith Emerson had been harbouring a vision for a number of years with Nice, one of the first English groups to flirt with a neoâ€"classical stance. Emerson wanted to take the marriage of classical and rock music one step further so he joined forces with exâ€"Arthur Brown drummer Carl Palmer and Greg Lake, who had been an integral part of the original King Crimson lineup. There was never a question about virtuosity and Emerson and Palmer made sure that the stage show featured ample doses of pyrotechnics. Lake became a role player, his acoustic interludes serving as the seventhâ€"inning stretch to allow Emerson and Palmer time to rest enervated musâ€" cles. The live show was somewhat legendary, if only because the early 70‘s was tolerant of such acts. Granted, Emerson was an innovative showman and although many of his disciples would be reluctant to acknowledge him, his musical and physical gymnastics influenced a generation of artâ€"rockers. Without the availability of stage gimmicks and because of the predilection for unnecessary noodling, the band never managed to transfer the live show to vinyl. Only on the first album and the later Brain Salad Surgery is there any semblance of order or for that matter, worthwhile songwriting. The latter is the only record to harness the stage energy and apply it to some significant material. While Brain Salad Surgery is hardly an important album, it does mark the approximate point in time when Keith Emerson slipped into a deep sleep. In the years that followed, he drifted in and out of this comatose state, cognizant just long enough to revitalize what had become rock‘s latest dinosaur. When he finally came to, he couldn‘t find Carl Palmer â€" he was overseeing the slow death of Asia â€" or more significantly, a calendar. Not realizing that it was now 1986 and time to change the record, he started a frantic search for a surrogate Palmer. The candidate would have to be an accomplished player not unused to lengthy solos and most importantly, have a last name that started with the 16th letter of the alphabet. _ Cozy Powell (Jeff Beck, Rainbow) filled the bill and Emerson, Lake and Powell was bor[L â€" c . Different in name only, Emerson, Lake and Powell will do nothing for an already tarnished reputation. The three wander aimlessly through fractured song structures and Emerson â€" hopelessly rooted in the 70‘s â€" maintains his fixation with simultaneously emulating and bastardizing the classics.
