Before 1839, however, it was quite a different matter. Wellâ€"toâ€" do families could commission the talents of trained artists to paint formal portraits for them but the largest proportion of the populaâ€" tion had to rely on the services of itinerant silhouettists who apâ€" peared in their communities from time to time. The black profiles they produced, using a variety of techniques, were popâ€" ular in Europe from the 16th century, but it took the publicaâ€" tion of a book by physionomist Johann Casper Lavanter to transform the art to the fad it became in the 18th century. For the months of August, September and October the Heriâ€" tage Gallery of the Joseph Schneider Haus will present: a special exhibit entitled Likeâ€" nesses. Guest Curatored by Waterloo collectors Fred and Dora Mae Blayney, it traces the history of portraiture from its early beginâ€" nings with the simple silhouette until the advent of photography which irrevocably changed the way in which "likenesses" were captured and preserved for the future. It is hard to conceive of a time when photographs did not exist: now most of us own our own cameras and the recording of photographic likenesses of friends and family requires just a few easy steps. Once it became widely held that profiles were character reâ€" vealing, everyone, from the highest to the lowest station, clammered to have his likeness Waterloo Community Services are presâ€" enting "Juggleknots", a juggling perforâ€" mance and workshop by Franklin Harâ€" graves. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. August 6, at the Albert McCormick Arena, Waterloo.
