PAGE 18 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, JULY 2, 1986 The quiet, unassuming Merritt is anything but on stage. He becomes the consummate entertainer, with a stage presence that encompasses a plethora of emotions and physical transformations. He can tell a story with childâ€"like charm, display his sense of humor through a sefl{; of animated facial expressions or most importantly, exhibit a powerful, passionate voice not unlike the emotive style of Elvis Costello. There‘s a very good chance that Merritt‘s on the threshold of something big. Those who missed Thursday‘s show passed up the chance to see a remarkable artist in a cosy setting and at a bargain price. Because as was the case with label mate Jane Siberry, Scott Merritt‘s days of playing small venues are numbered. as it is on stage, it will be accorded a much better commercial treatment than Serious Interference. _ > The band â€" Bob DiSalle (drums), Matt Zimbel (percussion), David Woodhead (fretless bass) and Doug Wilde (synthesizers) â€" is a powerhouse. Zimbel is an inventive player and because the new material is more percussionâ€"oriented, he often dominated the proceedings . Set in the 1930s, Here We Are follows a newlywed couple as they begin their journey together. It is a play evoking both laughter and sympathy as the couple gets over their ackward moments. Heroes is one person‘s idea of what could happen to Superman and the Lone Ranger as they approach middle age. It‘s a fun look at the world of comic book heroes.
