More than 200,000 books are processed each year by the staff of the Ontario Library Services Centre. _ Chronicle photo Chronicle Staff The average library user has probably never heard of the Ontario Library Services Centre. In all likelihood there are very few people outside the library community who are aware of the services this now Waterlooâ€"based nonâ€"profit corporation provides. _ But, you can bet librarians, across the province know about the Library Service Centre. In fact, the centre, which last week opened new 9,000â€"squareâ€"foot offices on Dearborn Place, now helps more than 100 Ontario public libraries, servicing approximately 25 per cent of the province‘s population, in their book acquisition and processâ€" ing. "For small libraries book acquisition can be quite an expensive processâ€"there‘s a lot of work involved in doing cataloguing and= preparation. Having all this done by us is a timesaver and a moneysaver for many libraries," explained Bill Zambusi, president of the Ontario Library Services Centre. The Centre will order any type of book needed by a library, and because of bulkbuying can purchase at a reduced cost. Qther services include: cataloguing of books and other library materials; preparation (with plastic jackets etc.); compilation of management reports on book orders and other automated support services. dncA buduct bah Souac ied Cns o e n t en o o e en ilintt whridatindiiisiciedirin itb brmndininnininn esnt o e s . A Cl Established in 1967 as a division of the Midwestern Regional Library System (now the Ontario Library Serviceâ€"Saugeen) the service became an independent corporation in 1981. It was one of four such services started by Ontario library systems in ‘67 with funding assistance from the province; the other three were less successful, and have been disbanded. ‘"In Canada th;;};--aâ€";n;lique set upâ€"there are similar services, but they‘re all profitâ€"oriented. We‘re strictly nonâ€"profit. Everything we do is on a feeâ€"forâ€"service basis," said Zambusi. _ In its first year the library service processed 68,000 books, purchased from only a dozen publishers. Now, the service‘s permanent staff of 25, plus additonal parttime help as required, processes approximately 200,000 books each year, with a value of $2.5 million, and deal with "several thousand" publishers in the U.K., U.S. and Canada. According to Zambusi, the Centre has already been approached by libraries outside the province, but has decided for the time being to restrict its service to Ontario facilities. In the future, however, he predicts the Centre will establish a nationâ€"wide operation. Waterloo Regional Police report the following break and enters for the week of June 23â€"June 29.
