Richard O‘Brien Chronicle Statt With seven good scoring chances (as counted by Athletics coach Dave Pearcey) in the first half and another seven in the second half, Athletics often looked like soccer‘s answer to the Gang That Couldn‘t Shoot Straight, but that‘s one rap they can live with if they continue to play as well as they did. Waterloo Athletics might as well have been shooting fish in a barrel. y In their game with Banat Friday night at Seagram Stadiâ€" um they were getting all the shots they could possibly need and they weren‘t going to come up emptyâ€"handed. ‘"We‘re working hard on finishâ€" ing but they‘re still worried about players coming from beâ€" hind them (while setting up a shot)," said Pearcey. ‘"But it‘s a remarkable improvement." It was just a question of how many goals they could score and the number turned out to be three as they won 3â€"0 in their Kitchener and District Soccer League second division game. Greig Heideman gave Athletâ€" ics an early goal, the scored again in the first half as the result of a throwâ€"in taken from the sidelines deep in Banat terriâ€" tory. The throwâ€"in caught Banat players off guard, and with good reason, since a linesman had signalled that Banat should have possession of the ball. The game marked the return of Marcel Desmeules from vacaâ€" tion in England and he made his presence felt with some long shots that had some power beâ€" hind them. Desmeules was rewarded for his efforts with a second half goal set up by a free kick near the corner after a foul on Sean Tuckett, who also had some good chances in the first half. Forward Steve Cahoon missed on two great opportunities in the second half and Liam McFarlane kicked over the net on another chance provided by Banat‘s genâ€" erous defence. Athletics have the opportunity to strengthen their already good backfield with the return of Herold Bryan, a veteran of the team who wasn‘t available when the season started. Next game for Athletics is Thursday at 7 at Seagram Stadiâ€" um when Galt Eagles are the visitors. Athletics and Eagles are tied for the division lead, each with 11 points.
