PAGE 28 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESOAY, JUNE 18, 1986 Ross MacDonald Chronicle Special Golden Palominos Visions of Excess Celluloid While not an actual group per se â€" the members change from time to time â€" the Golden Palominos are an integral part of the New York avantâ€"garde scene. Structurally, the number of musicians fluctuates from the live setting to the studio. From an artistic standpoint, the differences are even more acute. A look at the assortment of Golden Palomino lineups over the past couple of years reveals a wide crossâ€"section of musical pedigrees. . If the band has a common denominator, it‘s drummer Anton Fier (Feelies, Herbie Hancock, Lounge Lizards) and bassist Bill Laswell. Along with partâ€"time guitarist Airto Lindsay, the three were crucial members of the Massaâ€" cre/Material/Lounge Lizards family tree, a triumvirate that at one time or another was the nerve center of the avantâ€"garde scene. Palominos played an abrasive brand of jazz/funk/rock/noise and like Massacre and the Lounge Lizards, inhabited the outer regions of popular music. Assisted by an assortment of remarkable musicians â€" including the reclusive Fred Frith â€" the Palominos stretched the boundaries of various disciplines and like their forerunners, redefined the term avantâ€"garde. Lindsay formed the Golden Palominos after leaving the Lounge Lizards, the groundâ€"breaking jazz/funk outfit that left many jazz purists with a bad taste. Ez}rly editions of the Visions of Excess is the first recorded work in three years. Once again the group is made up of an eclectic collection of itinerant artists that includes two brilliant guitarists, Jody Harris and Richard Thompson, and such diverse vocalists as Johnny Lydon, Michael Stipe (R.E.M.) and Jack Bruce. Because of the backgrounds of the musicians involved â€" folk, rock, punk â€" visions of Excess is the most accessible Golden Palominos project to date. Unlike previous collaborations that embraced a number of styles, this is closer to rock than anything else. Fier‘s roots are in rock music and for that reason, he does an admirable job as producer of assimilating a pop sensibility. And as a drummer, very few of his counterparts can shift from one genre to another with such aplomb. The opening cut ‘"Boy (Go)" is a wonderful track and sets the pace for what follows. With Stipe‘s plaintive vocals, Thompson‘s unique guitar stylings and Fier‘s resonant production, this could be easily mistaken for R.E.M. From this point on, the tempo shifts into high gear and the music takes on a harder edge. In fact, most of the songs carry a sonic impact similar to those on the new Public Image album. Of course this is no coincidence considering Laswell produced the latter and Johnny Lydon reciprocates the favour with a somewhat autobiographical ‘‘The Animal Speaks." Visions of Excess is an unexpected pleasure, hard rock for the thinking man. But if history is any indictation, it‘s doubtful if this is a harbinger of a trend. I don‘t think any of these guys could sit still long enough for that to happen.
