PAGE 14 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18 Lori Warkentin is just one of many people who have lunched at the chip wagon being operated by Greg Daiton and Pat Shaw this summer in the Town Square lot. If facial expression means anything, she seems to enjoy the end product. Mark Bryson photos Mark Bryson Chronicle Staff It‘s unanimousâ€"well, almost unanimousâ€"the latest addition to Waterloo‘s core area is a smashing success. _ _ Spuds, the name of the controversial chip wagon being operated by two enterprising University of Waterloo students on the Town Square parking lot, has only been in operation since last Monday. But already a loyal following has developed. _"The french fries are fantastic, the best I‘ve ever had," says Beryl Smart of Kitchener. ‘"My only complaint is that it‘s not open _Sun_da):."‘A Smart operates a business in the Uptown area and loves the idea, not to mention the taste, of the quick and inexpensive lunch that Spuds provides. To date she has eaten there every day except last Thursday, and that was because of mechanical problems with the wagon. "A restaurant owner complained to me Saturday about how popular this truck is. I, for one, hope it stays that way," she said. First time customer Betty Buckle agrees. ‘"They‘re good, very good. They taste a lot better than most fries," she said. Spuds is owned and operated by Greg Daiton and his wife Pat Shaw. After going through a tough battle to gain approval for their project at Waterloo City Council, the two feel they are a definite asset to the city‘s core. _ Kitchener MPP David Cooke was on hand last Friday to help Community Mediation Service (CMS) celebrate six years in the community. ‘"‘The response has been great. Everything has been so positive and overwhelming," said Dalton. "In fact one guy told me these were the best french fries he has tried since he was in Australia."‘ CMS is a program of Commuâ€" nity Justice Initiatives of Waterâ€" loo Region, and is the longest running program of its kind in Canada. Quaint chip wagon draws rave reviews during opening week Cooke, as a solicitor, has had regular contact with CMS since it began. He has recently spoken with Attorney General Ian Scott, about the program‘s need for assistance, and explains that the lack of funding is not because the government doesn‘t see a need for the service, but because they can‘t decide from which budget funding should come. "I‘m amazed at the number of communities in the province that don‘t see any need for a service like this," said Cooke. "It‘s a positive step for this community, and it helps the system .‘ CMS works as a mediation service between any parties with disputes to settle. "I still feel it doesn‘t belong in the core area. Only this past weekend I saw these chip wagon things in Southampton and Owen Sound and they were pretty seedy," said Business Improvement Area president Terry Holiohan. Still objecting is one thing, but does Hollohan‘s organization plan to attempt to appeal Waterloo council‘s 5â€"4 decision to a higher body? "The democratic process was exercised and we lost. What we‘re going to do now is lobby city hall to try and get a bylaw preventing transient vendors in the city‘s core," he said. To many, council would be making a mistake if they obliged. _ _ â€" â€" s "I like to see things happening on the street and I think it‘s about time something like this has come to the Twin Cities," said noonâ€"hour patron Ron MacDonald of Kitchener. "I hope this is only the beginning." One of Hollohan‘s major concerns, the mess that will be created by litter, has also failed to materialize to date, says Daiton. "I walked the entire block after a very busy day Saturday and found only a few forks, which I picked up," said Dalton.
