LETTERS A few weeks ago I criticized what I knew of the Waterloo region‘s physical education programs for public schools. Several teachers approached me to say that though they try to keep fitness in the forefront of schooling, they too feel that the support is not forthcoming from the school board. I had mentioned in my column a few weeks ago that the basis of physed. in school is team sports. It has been pointed out to me, however, that in public school ablJeast, the teachers are required to instruct their classes in activities that promote maximum parâ€" ticipation. This cannot be done with team sports. Therefore the students are taught basic skills which could then be used when they get involved with team sports in high school. St. Mary‘s hospital seeks information St. Mary‘s General Hospital in Kitchenâ€" er is currently compiling a comprehenâ€" sive history of the hospital. This project is being funded by the Federal government under the Summer Experience Employâ€" ment Development program. The hospital is owned by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Diocese of Hamilton and it was under their direction that St. Mary‘s was built and officially opened in 1924. Since that time the staff of St. Mary‘s has provided excellent health care for the citizens of Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo and the surrounding region. Some teachers have said to me that they personally view fitness as an integral part of the skill teaching. Many teachers, however, do not promote fitness, most likely because they are not fit themselves. If they are not enthusiasâ€" tic about something, it would be awfully difficult to spread enthusiasm. It is fortunate that most of the public school students have either inherent or newâ€" found enthusiasm for physical activity. Most kids, given the chance, love to exercise and feel their body move. This was made apparent to me after the outdoor aerobic class I taught at a local school as part of the fitness chalâ€" lenge. Because I was surprised by the tremenâ€" dous effort on behalf of the students (particularly the younger students) I felt my objectives were reached. I was surprised as well with the excitement exercising had created. During the course of the next few days and following week 1 heard remarks such as: "I wish we could have done it for as long as the 20â€"Minute Workout.""‘ (Needâ€" less to say this particular student was totally impressed with the reality that we had lasted even longer.) ‘"When can we do it again?" "‘That was fun."" (I didn‘t get any "That was awesome" remarks, much to my disappointment.) On the other hand 1 also heard remarks such as: ‘"*You nearly broke my legs!" ‘‘My heart almost stopped." "I can hear my heart right in my ears!" Whatever the remarks, I‘d like to thank the teachers out there who may not have taken kindly to my remarks that the school system is not promoting fitness. Even if you do it alone, you‘re still doing it. As is the case with many large institutions the records which have been kept are incomplete. The objective of this project is to organize the existing records and to supplement them with information from other sources: former and present employees and board members, Nursing School Alumnae, volunteers, and conâ€" cerned citizens. Members of the commuâ€" nity can provide a vast supply of informâ€" wation ranging from newspaper clippings and photographs, to diaries. I once read that one of the first rules for getting rich is to understand how long it takes, relatively speaking. It seems here so many people get inta trouble. Never in our long history, have people given up their secret belief that it is possible, through some kind of manipulation or other, to get rich suddenly. And every day, in any newspaper, we can read of the ageâ€"old folly of the attempts to prove this is so Kitchener, Ontario N2M 1B2. CWAC veterans reunion In the Old Testament, Jeremiah to be exact, there appears this warning: "As the partridge sitteth on eggs and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool." The news media have helped a great deal in other years, so once again we call Canadian Women‘s Army Corps Veterans to annual reunion. We still haven‘t located all our CWAC friends of those days of the Second World War. Every day, in the courts across the country, men stand stunned as prison sentences are passed down from the bench. They are taken away and locked up because, for some reason this lesson was not made clear to them. And this fool play is confined to the privileged â€" the poor are nowhere when it comes to the getâ€"richâ€"quick schemes. I read recently of a man who was an allâ€"round athlete, went on to get his law degree, and then found himself being sentenced to 10 years in prison because he tried to take shortcuts to wealth. Officials, both elected and otherwise, jeopardize their careers for easy money. The Abscam scandal in the United States showed how eager are some people in high places to sell their influence for the fast buck. People with fine educational backgrounds, with great careers ahead of them in business and industry, are finding their lives blasted because they used their positions in schemes to get This event is sponsored by the Canadian ‘"‘To a certain extent, it is an invasion of privacy. The practise of taking "kickâ€"backs" for favored treatment to contractors or suppliers is but one that is epidemic. The professional confidence trickster and petty embezzler are pikers compared to the highly intelligent people who perpetrate the biggest and most contrived, fraudulent schemes. Why would they not know better? Because their egos override their intelligence. They see themselves as smart operators, not criminals. They say to themselves, ‘"only fools get caught, and I‘m too smart for that‘", or, ‘"if I only do it just this once, I can get away with it." But somehow it never stops at "just this once"‘ and so they are deluded by their own cleverness. Usually, such people are given plenty of "time" to ponder their crooked thinking, to realize that, no matter how smart, they cannot make rules just for themselves or beat the ones that others live by. They might contemplate that, had they taken the necessary time to get rich by honest means, they would now be further ahead and would have built for themselves a sound place in the economy. You want to have a rich and prosperous life? Fine. You have as. much right to it as any other living person. Only take the time to gain your riches the right way, and you shall not lose them in the midst of your days, and at your end you shall not be a fool. It is curious that so many people think that they want more money than they really do; and will settle for a lot less than they could get, if they went about it the right way!
