PAGE 32 - WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY. MAY 28, 1986 Richard O'Brien Chronicle Staff Some things change, some things stay the same, - And when Bluevale Knights girls soccer team played host to Waterloo Vikings Tuesday in the championship game of the Wa- terloo County high school league, there was a chance the game could go into overtime because the teams were as evenly matched as they were in a similar meeting a year ago that wasn't decided in regulation time. In fact, things did stay the same as the teams did go into overtime after playing to a scoreless tie. What changed, however, was the result as Knights emerged as 2-1 winners this season because they out- scored Vikings in a shootout after overtime ended in a 1-1 tie. Both clubs knew they would be in for a good game with the outcome anything but certain. In fact, the only thing team mem- bers knew for sure was that, win or lose, both clubs would be headed for Guelph Thursday to compete in the Central Western Ontario championship tourna- ment Thursday in Guelph. Knights and Vikings advanced to the championship game with wins on Friday. Knights beat Glenview Park Panthers 2-0 on a shutout by Carissa Langley and two goals by scoring star Laura Coppolino while Vikings edged Preston Panthers 1-0 on Andrea Jalbert's flawless goaltending and a goal by Leanne Weins late in the first half. Replying for Vikings were Col- leen Day, Anita Toogood and Jennifer Hume. scoring chance in regulation time on Tuesday, but kicked over the net on an excellent throw-in from Val Simpson. But the same players combined to tie the game in overtime after Weins took advantage of miscommunication between Knights' goalkeeper Carissa Langley and a fullback to score the go-ahead goal. “I like our heart," said Knights' coach Perry Chittick, "A lot of teams would have folded after being down in the second overtime. I thought the teams were evenly matched. Any team can win in a shootout and we were fortunate to do so. Chittick praised the play of Vikings' Weins and Day while recognising the work of Simpson, a player who created many chances because she can throw the ball in front of the net from the sidelines. "Val's the best in the league and I challenge any boy in senior high school soccer to throw a ball better than her. She's a tremen- dous athlete." After Friday's game, Knights' coach Perry Chittick pointed to increased depth as. a reason for his club's record of 9-0 to that point. -. Additions to the team include Enter and Coppo1ino, both of whom were in track and field last year, along with Karen Hicks and Simpson. _ "They- (new players) compli- ment our established players like Laura Hager" said Chittick. LETS GET FIT!! FOR 15 MINUTES "She may be the smallest girl in the league but she plays like the biggest." 7 - - - _ - Chittickadded that the club's dimension has increased to the point where it has 14 or 15 players he can move in and out of the lineup compared with eight bona tide starters a year ago. "A lot of credit hai; to go to the Waterloo Minor Soccer Club," said Chittick. "They've laid the groundwork, instilled the fun- damentals."
