PAGE 22 - WATERLOO 0mm. WEDNESDAY, MAY 28, Marg Zavaros Chronicle Special SEEQ After the long Canadian winter the call of the outdoors is heard daily. It's a time to travel, and it's a time to stay at home in your own special place irtthe back yard. Most of our home decorating is centered around indoor rooms, but "The Patio Garden" is a book that places emphasis on that special outdoor room, It is here we find respite from a busy world. We can create an intimate quiet spot where we can read, dine or fall asleep in a hammock undisturbed while in reality there is a busy street just over that fence or hedge. Depending on the planners taste there are suggestions as how to create a feeling of space or enclosure. Some patios have been so cleverly designed they give the impression they are in the country while others give the illusion of space when there are only a few metres in the total backyard. When planning your special outdoor room the author suggests you should take all the care you would when planning an indoor room with an effort to keep it a low maintenance area. Yet some of these gardens planned around a patio can provide enough work to keep anyone puttering daily if the householder has a very green thumb. Roof top garden patios, decks, and small back porch areas are all illustrated. Included is a section on different garden containers, furniture and plants that are suitable for your special place. The author points out we continue with these time worn methods because we know of no others and we are often afraid of trying anything new. He introduces the reader to new kinds of gardening equipment such as the long-handled bulb planter, dibble, furrow hoe and the oscillating hoes as well as other gardening aids that are easier on the knees and back. The method of using plastic to cover the soil in rows and around plants is highly recom- mended. The argument being that weed seedlings cannot penetrate the plastic and soon die from lack of sunlight and moisture, while garden plants inserted in slits flourish with much less work and maintenance used in other gardening methods. The mulch and raised bed gardens are discussed in length along with new methods of fertilizing. Most of this book is aimed at the vegetable garden but the last chapter offers varieties of flowers that do well with these methods too. 7 Black and white illustrations are used effectively throughout the book. _ _ " _ There are some unconventional and inter- esting theories presented in each chapter. It would be wise to experiment with these methods on a small scale first to see if they are compatible with your particular style in gar- dening. Nodig, No-weed Gardening. Raymond Poin- celot.
