Well there is and in fact, it's the best seat because more than a decade ago, Bob helped to build the wagon. "ago... After years as a journeyman - I remember seeing him a number of years ago as a solo folkie opening for Emerson, Lake and Palmer(!) - Seger hit paydirt in 1976 with Night Moves. The album proved to be a benchmark of Midwestern rock, a mixture of clean hard rock, melodic ballads and a lyrical content geared to blue-collar America. While contemporanies and artistic counter- parts such as Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty continued to evolve, Seger was content to become a good corporate citizen. Every- thing in the past decade has been a re-working of the Night Moves theme - not an actual regression mind you, but more like a series of subtle variations. Like a Rock is true to form and further proof that Seger is rock's Rip Van Winkle. Rife with overblown sentimentality and a half-baked wistfulness, Seger's yearning for a return to days of yore seems somewhat out of place considering his present social standing. While seemingly unable to shake the fact he's no longer 18, I wonder if he would also prefer" the old standard of living. As usual, the musicianship is impeccable and the production crystalline, making this a state-of-the-art anachronism that will be the perfect musical accompaniment should they ever send a shuttle back into time. Jesus and Mary Chain f Psychocandy In spite of the obvious connotations of this Scottish group's name and the minimalistic nature of the music, Psychocandy is neither anti-religious nor the latest statement of anarchy. Sure it's abrasive - a sort of Public Image/Alan Vega hybrid - but in a charming, hedonistic way. What initially seems like nothing more than a wall of distorted guitars that drone endlessly and monotone vocals that are deliberately detached, eventually reveals something more. Sure enough, it's psychocandy, 60's psyche- delia with an 80's bent, punk for punkers with a sweet tooth. Like candy floss, there's not much substance but it sure is good while it lasts. And like it or not, it's sure to cause a reaction because it is designed to do so - it has been hailed as a work of art, passed off as a one-shot curio and decried as worthless noise. Anyway you look at it, Psychocandy has served its purpose - Jesus and Mary Chain has made its way into the public conscious- ness. Whether the band has staying power will depend on how it expands on what is basically a one-dimensional sound. But even if all else fails, this will be remembered as one of the years more interesting records.
