A pair of wellâ€"known Waterloo track and field athletes â€"â€" one from Waterloo collegiate and the other from Bluevale â€"â€" showed themseives to be among the best at the Waterloo County high school track and field meet held Monday and Tuesday at Centenâ€" nial Stadium in Kitchener. Mike Cowan of the WCI Vikâ€" ings was a triple winner among senior boys and Lisa Kueneman of the Bluevale Knights took similar honors in the senior girls category at the meet which was won handily by a combined team of St. Jerome‘s and St. Mary‘s athletes with 393 points. But the points amassed by Cowan and Kueneman â€"â€" each totalled 21 â€"â€" helped their schools‘ totals as Knights finished second with 243 and Vikings were third with 193. Cowan won the 110 metre hurdles in 15.7 seconds and his other wins came in field events. He won the long jump by spanâ€" ning 6.41 metres and his distance of 13.21 metres was good for first place in the triple jump. Kueneman, meanwhile, was on a recordâ€"setting pace over the twoâ€"day event. She set meet records of 25.0 seconds and 57.4 seconds in the 200 and 400 metre runs and her time of 12.4 seconds in the 100 tied the existing reâ€" cord. St. Mary‘s and St. Jerome‘s athletes nearly swept all of the midget, junior and senior boys categories but were prevented from doing so because Knights‘ team of senior boys was first with 79 points. Knights‘ senior boys won on the basis of having many of their numbers finish in the top six of each event but they had some individual winners. Frank Krieschneider won the javelin competition with a throw of 54.00 metres. Chris Maithaner won the pole vault with a height of 3.55 and Kirk daSilva added to the total with second place finishes in the 400 and 800 runs. In midget boys competition Chuck Haase of Bluevale won the triple jump at 11.38 and was second in the long jump. WCI‘s Tim Lamon won the high jump with a height of 1.74. (Continued from page 27) The national The Nats leave March 18 for France, then move on to Belgium for more competition. Then after two more weeks of training in Calgary they‘re on the road again for trips to Cuba and Brazil to meet two of the world‘s best teams. Then after a tour of Alberta and British Columbia, the team goes to Czechoslovakia and Sweâ€" den near the end of the sumâ€" mer. After that, it might be possible to catch Ambrose in action at campuses in Ontario. Details have to be worked out, but the national team might be involved in something similar to the Hyundai Cup the Canadian women were involved in with the United States, Korea and Japan a couple months ago. But if such a tournament doesn‘t materialize and if he doesn‘t return for another season with Warriors the opportunity remains to see Ambrose on television in the ‘88 Olympics since he has definite plans to stay with the team at least that long. "I would probably stay at least until the Olympics and then possibly longer,"" said Ambrose. "It depends on whether I enjoy it and what type of play I‘m going to get." _ _ __ Cowan, Kueneman triple winners at County track meet WCI‘s Elias Mulamoottil won Stay tuned the 400 in 51.2 and the long jump at 6.13 metres and also finished second in the 200 to finish tops among junior boys with 19 points. Gavin Kerr won the 1,500 in 4:19.8 and Steve Israel was best in javelin competition with a toss of 50.114. Doug Malloy of WCI was best in the senior boys 1,500 in 4: 11.1. Among midget girls, Paula Schwan won the 3,000 in 10:38.9 and was second in both the 800 and 1,500. Janice Awad, also of WCI, won the midget girls javeâ€" lin with a 32.58â€"metre throw. Junior girls discus was won by WCJI‘s Val Smith with a distance of 24.68 and she also won the long jump with a mark of 4.75. Shannon Archer of Bluevale won the junior girls javelin at 29.34.
