PAGE 12 â€"â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, MAY 14, Chronicle Staft Westhill© Drive residents are calling it "a step in the right direction‘‘ but are not about to leave it at that. That‘s the feeling about the Regional Municipality of Waterâ€" loo‘s engineering committee‘s decision to carry out landscaping in the form of tree and shrub planting on private properties adjacent to the Waterloo landfill site at an estimated cost of $33,000 including design and planting. _ *"We‘re happy for the moment but there is a long way to go," said Glen Shantz of 101 Westhill Dr. Shantz says the move to shield the Erb Street landfill site is something that was agreed on in 1973. He and his neighbors have long petitioned for improvements to the facility in keeping with that agreement which called for trees and fences to be erected to reduce the dump‘s impact on the Employee (Continued from page 10) cated by company officials as well as Hikaru Oka, Consul General of Japan. Oka predicted great things for the plant. â€""I have a feeling Mitsibushi will do better than Napoleon did in Waterloo," he said. _ Prior to the official ribbonâ€"cutâ€" ting ceremony, Hiroyuki Ihara, member of the Mitsubishi board of directors and deputy general manager of international operaâ€" tions, donated a a pair of televiâ€" sions to the two hospitals in Mitsubishi Electrics‘s new Waâ€" terloo facility which current emâ€" ploys 70 persons also houses a 23,000â€"squareâ€"foot national wareâ€" housing and distribution centre. The matter came to a head last summer when a consultant recommended expansion of the landfill site as the best solution to the region‘s |longâ€"term waste management needs. The neighbors are also conâ€" cerned about the safety of water wells near the dump aithough numerous tests have revealed no contamination. "They say things are under control but there are no guaranâ€" tees. If it ever became contaminâ€" ated it would be very drastic," said Shantz. Residents are concerned about noise, odor and debris problems as well. At the same meeting, the engineering committee approved the plans for the widening of Erb Street from Caroline Street to McDougall Road, to allow for a proposed 24â€"inch watermain. The alternative taken by the engineering committee includes; four iiâ€"foot traffic lanes, curb and gutter both sides, four foot TV‘s and home audio products to a steadily growing network of dealers. The opening of the Waterloo facility, which actually took place Jan. 6 with 23 employees, represents the third major step undertaken by Mitsubishi Elecâ€" tric in Canada in recent years. Mitsubishi Electric Sales Canada Inc. (MESCA), was established in October, 1979 to sell home and car audio equipment. It has since broadened its product lines to include all audio and video aspects of home entertainment equipment. In January, 1983 the sale of Electrohome Brand Home Entertainment products was added to its activities. Then in June, 1983 the color picture tube manufacturing facility was acâ€" quired in Midland, Ontario. A second assembly line is currently being constructed and is expected to be in operation June 1. Company projections estimate 100 employees in Waâ€" terloo by yvear‘s end. wide boulevard area plus a five foot wide sidewalk on the north side and a two foot wide bouleâ€" vard area plus a five foot wide sidewalk on the south side. Both decisions are expected to be ratified at Thursday‘s meetâ€" ing of regional council.
