St. David Catholic Secondary School has joined the major league of musical productions with the launching of L'il Abner, co-directed by International Opera Soprano, Elizabeth Straus and local Choreographer, Ursula Van Bustirk and produced by St. David's Student Council. The show nmstrom April 22-28. For members of the audience who remember the 1957 ttim St. David School's production of L'ii Abner includes Mark Cameron in the title role, Rob Simon as Peppy Yokum, Christine Thorpe as Daisy Mae and Tracey Kaittmtltgctt as Mammy Yokum. Children, adults, statesmen, phi- landerers. stars and people from every wnlk of life followed the adventures of Abner and the Dogpatch citizenry for 25 years in more than t,200 newspapers. The lead role has been as- signed to 16-year-old Mark Ca- meron, a grade ll student. Like the original Abner, Peter Palmer, Cameron stands well over 6'2" in height. Although he abandoned a potential career as a violinist at age three, Cameron continues in his love for music. Also, like Palmer, he is an outstanding athlete and an ex- cellent academic student. Christine Thorpe portrays the delightful Daisy Mae, "whose one aim in life is to be a good wife and to marry L'il Abner one day." To prepare herself for this task, the heroine is "practiein" up by chasin’ gathers and an- telope. The 16-year-old Thorpe is also a grade ll student. Petite Christine, has danced since the age of 4. In addition to her role as Daisy Mae, she may be heard at the local music festival during the same week as a solo per- former. Tickets are already sold out for the Tuesday and Thursday per- formances but seats for Wednes- day, Friday and Saturday may be purchased from Mr. Schmidt or Mr. Sullivan at St. David's 885-1340. Tickets are also avail- able from the school for the gala for Saturday night. Cameo roles are played by staff members, Nick Roehrig (Principal), Peter Smola, Dan Ingoldsby and student Tim Rovers who makes five quick changes.
